Full Description
Tangkuban Perahu Volcano
Tangkuban Perahu, whose name means upturned boat in Sundanese, is an active stratovolcano rising to about 2,084 metres north of Bandung. Local legend says the mountain formed when a prince named Sangkuriang kicked over the boat he was building, and its shape does look like a boat turned upside down. The crater rim is one of the most accessible volcano viewpoints in Indonesia.
You walk around the rim of Kawah Ratu, the largest crater, and can smell sulphur and see steam rising from vents and bubbling mud. The air is cool at this altitude, so bring a light jacket. If you are asking is Tangkuban Perahu worth visiting from Jakarta, the answer is yes when you combine it with the plantations and hot springs, because the trip covers several highlights in one day.
Lembang and the Local Coffee Centre
Lembang is a cool hill town north of Bandung, popular with weekenders from Jakarta for its gardens and highland air. It is also a coffee-growing area, and Indonesia is famous for the variety of its beans and the unusual processing methods used by some farms.
At the coffee centre, your guide shows you the coffee plants and beans and explains how the beans are grown, processed and roasted, and the different types. The visit takes about an hour, and small items such as beans and gifts can be bought if you wish, at your own expense. It is a relaxed stop between the volcano and the tea fields.
Ciater Tea Plantation
The road to the hot springs climbs through the tea plantations of Ciater, where rows of bright green bushes cover the hillsides around the volcano. Tea has been grown here since the colonial era, and the cool, misty climate and volcanic soil suit it well.
You stop for a walk and photos, and your guide explains the history of tea in the region, how it is cultivated and picked and the different types produced. It is one of the most scenic parts of the trip. If you want the best light for photos, the plantations look their greenest in the dry season, and the mornings are usually clearer than the afternoons.
Sari Ater Hot Springs at Ciater
The Ciater area is known for its natural hot springs, heated by the volcano and rich in sulphur. Sari Ater is a resort with bathing pools where the warm water is said to soothe tired muscles. Entrance tickets are included, and you have about an hour to change, soak and relax.
Bring a swimsuit, a towel and a change of clothes, as these are not provided. After the long drive and the volcano visit, a warm soak is a welcome end to the day. Massage treatments are usually available on site and are paid separately.
Subang Fruit and the Long Drive
Between Jakarta and the highlands, the route passes Subang, known for its honey pineapple. You stop at a fruit stand to taste fresh local fruit, including pineapple, snake fruit and mangosteen when in season, and to see farmers at work in the rice fields around.
The journey is long, about two and a half to three hours each way in an air-conditioned vehicle, so the day lasts about 14 hours. You return to Jakarta between about 7:00 and 8:00 PM, and later on weekends because of traffic. Do not plan a flight or an important appointment on the same evening.
