Full Description
Merdeka Square and the National Monument (Monas)
Merdeka Square, or Independence Square, is the green heart of central Jakarta and one of the largest city squares in the world, surrounded by ministries and the presidential office. In its centre stands the National Monument, known to everyone as Monas: a 132-metre white obelisk topped by a flame covered in gold leaf, a symbol of the nation's fight for independence.
The monument's basement houses a museum of 48 dioramas telling Indonesia's story from prehistoric times to the modern day, a quick and clear introduction to the country before the rest of the tour. Plan about an hour here, including a short walk across the square. Monas is closed on Mondays, so on that day your guide shows you the monument from outside and adds time elsewhere.
Istiqlal Mosque
Istiqlal Mosque, whose name means independence, is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the national mosque of Indonesia. Completed in the late 1970s, it is a vast modern building of white marble and steel, with a huge spherical dome and a single tall minaret, set in landscaped grounds in the centre of the city. Remarkably, it was designed by a Christian architect.
The mosque stands almost opposite Jakarta Cathedral, deliberately placed as a symbol of peace and religious tolerance, and your guide explains how the two communities share the neighbourhood. The visit lasts about 30 minutes. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered; women may be asked to cover their hair. Note that the mosque does not receive tourists on Fridays, the day of congregational prayer.
Jakarta Cathedral
Jakarta Cathedral, officially the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, is a neo-Gothic church begun in 1891 that remains one of the most elegant colonial-era buildings in the city. Its pointed spires, tall windows of stained glass and pale stone facade contrast strikingly with the modern lines of Istiqlal across the road.
Inside, three altars form a semicircle, and the old main altar is shaped so that it reflects sound like a conch shell. Your guide shows you the details of the nave and explains the role of the cathedral in Jakarta's history. Allow around 30 minutes; visitors should dress respectfully and keep quiet during services. Seeing the mosque and cathedral side by side is one of the most meaningful moments of any Jakarta city tour.
Old Batavia (Kota Tua) and the art of wayang
Kota Tua, the old town, was the heart of Batavia, the headquarters of Dutch rule in the East Indies from the 17th century. Its cobbled squares and colonial buildings, with their tall shuttered windows, recall the days when spices and other goods from across the archipelago passed through the city on their way to Europe.
Here you learn about wayang, Indonesia's famous puppet theatre, from puppeteers and makers who show how the puppets are carved, painted and played, and you see collections of wayang from different regions of the country. It is a hands-on, colourful stop of about 30 minutes, and one of the best ways to understand the stories and values that Javanese culture still passes down today.
Sunda Kelapa Harbour and the old drawbridge
Sunda Kelapa is Jakarta's oldest port, used long before the Dutch arrived and still busy today. Lines of traditional wooden pinisi schooners with tall masts and painted hulls moor along the quay, and dock workers load cargo by hand over narrow gangplanks, a scene that has changed little in generations.
On the way you pass the 17th-century drawbridge, a rare survivor of Batavia's fortifications. Your guide also shows you the high wall around the harbour area, which protects the land because parts of north Jakarta now lie below sea level. The harbour is the last stop, about 30 minutes, before our driver takes you back to your hotel. Halal food is easy to find all over Jakarta if you want to eat afterwards.
