Full Description
Monas, the National Monument in Merdeka Square
The National Monument, known to everyone as Monas, is the symbol of Jakarta and of Indonesian independence. The white obelisk rises 132 metres from the middle of Merdeka Square and is crowned by a flame sculpture covered in gold leaf, representing the spirit of the nation's struggle. Begun in 1961 and opened to the public in 1975, it stands in one of the largest city squares in the world, surrounded by lawns, deer park enclosures and government buildings.
On this Jakarta city tour you spend about an hour here with your guide, walking the square, taking photos and, on open days, visiting the monument area. Monas is closed on Mondays and public holidays; on those days the stop is made outside, which still gives the best view of the tower. Mornings are the most pleasant time to visit, before the midday heat.
Istiqlal Mosque and Jakarta Cathedral
Istiqlal Mosque, whose name means independence, is the national mosque of Indonesia and the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, able to hold well over a hundred thousand worshippers. Opened in 1978, it is a vast modern building of white marble and steel with a great dome and a single tall minaret, and its open galleries and courtyards are impressive even when empty. Your guide explains its symbolism and the etiquette inside during a visit of about thirty minutes.
Directly across the street stands Jakarta Cathedral, a neo-Gothic church begun in 1891, with slender spires, stained-glass windows and a carved old altar. The two buildings facing each other are a well-known image of religious harmony in Indonesia. Istiqlal is closed to visitors on Fridays for prayers, when the stop is made outside; dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered.
Kota Tua and Fatahillah Square, old Batavia
Kota Tua, the old town, is where Jakarta began as the Dutch trading city of Batavia in the seventeenth century. Its centre is Fatahillah Square, a broad cobbled plaza framed by colonial buildings: the white former city hall with its cupola, now the Jakarta History Museum, and the old offices, banks, post office and courthouse that now house museums, shops and cafés. Walking here really does feel like stepping back a few centuries.
This is the longest stop of the tour, about an hour, including a break. Your guide tells the story of Batavia, of the spice trade and of how the city grew, and leaves time for photos of the facades and the brightly painted vintage bicycles that line the square. A Kota Tua tour in the late morning is lively with local families and school groups.
Wayang puppet studio in the old town
Indonesia's puppet theatre, wayang, is one of the oldest storytelling traditions in Asia and is recognised by UNESCO as part of the world's intangible heritage. Wayang kulit shadow puppets are cut by hand from buffalo hide, punched with fine patterns and painted, then performed behind a lit screen to the sound of the gamelan orchestra, while wooden wayang golek puppets come from West Java.
At a small puppet studio in Kota Tua you meet the craftsmen, see how a figure is cut and painted, and join a short puppet-making class of about thirty minutes. You also learn how to move the puppets yourself and see figures from different regions of Indonesia, each with its own style. It is a hands-on stop that children and adults enjoy, and a good place to find a handmade souvenir if you wish.
Kota Intan Drawbridge and Sunda Kelapa Harbour
On the way to the sea you pass the Kota Intan Drawbridge, a red wooden bridge from the seventeenth century, the last of its kind in Jakarta, that once guarded the river entrance to Batavia. The tour ends at Sunda Kelapa, the old harbour where the city's story started long before the Dutch arrived, and which Portuguese and Dutch traders used when they first reached Java.
Sunda Kelapa is still a working port. Long rows of traditional wooden pinisi schooners with high curved bows and bright paint are moored along the quay, and dockworkers carry timber, cement and goods across narrow planks just as they have for generations. You spend about thirty minutes walking the quay with your guide, a fine last view of maritime Jakarta, before the drive back to your hotel.
