Full Description
Kawah Putih, the White Crater
Kawah Putih is a crater lake on the slopes of Mount Patuha, about 2,400 metres above sea level in the Ciwidey highlands, roughly a ninety-minute drive south of Bandung. The water is rich in sulphur, so its colour shifts with the weather and the light, from milky white to pale green and bright turquoise, while the shore is pale sand and grey rock. Bare trees and drifting steam make the scene feel almost unreal.
Sulphur was once mined here, and your guide explains the volcanic history of the crater and why the lake looks the way it does. Around 45 minutes is enough to walk the shore and the viewpoints; the sulphur smell is strong, so short visits are best. If you are wondering whether Kawah Putih is worth visiting, it is the single most striking landscape near Bandung. Mornings are usually clearest.
The tea plantations of South Bandung
Between the crater and the bridge the road crosses the tea estates of South Bandung, where neatly clipped rows of tea bushes cover the hills for kilometres. Tea has been grown in these cool highlands since the colonial era, and the plantations are still worked today, with pickers moving along the rows and narrow paths winding between the fields.
Your guide tells you about the tea and about daily life in the highland villages as you drive, and the scenic stops give you time for a stroll and photos among the bushes. Lunch is at a local café nearby with views over the landscape; West Java is a Muslim-majority region, and local cafés here serve halal food. The cool air is a welcome change from the city, so a light jacket is useful.
Rengganis Suspension Bridge
The Rengganis Suspension Bridge in the Ciwidey area is one of the longest suspension bridges in Southeast Asia, stretching across a deep valley of tropical forest. Walking across it is a light adventure: the deck sways gently underfoot, and the views open over the treetops and the river far below.
The visit here lasts about an hour and a quarter and includes the walk to and across the bridge. It is one of the most popular stops on any South Bandung tour, so your guide times the visit to avoid the busiest moments when possible. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the paths include steps and short climbs. People who are uneasy with heights can enjoy the forest views from the start of the bridge.
Rengganis Crater and its hot springs
Close to the bridge lies the Rengganis area, where small volcanic vents release steam and warm mineral water flows into natural pools along a stream. After the walk you can choose how to unwind: explore the steaming crater area further with your guide, or relax with your feet or whole body in the naturally warm water.
It is a pleasant way to finish the day before the drive back to Bandung, which takes about an hour and a half depending on traffic. Bring a change of clothes and a small towel if you plan to soak. The guide is flexible and adjusts the pace of the day to the group, so you are never rushed from one place to the next. Our driver then takes you back to your hotel or address in Bandung.
