Full Description
Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist monument in the world
Borobudur was built in the eighth and ninth centuries by the Sailendra rulers of Central Java, then left under volcanic ash and jungle for centuries before it was cleared in the nineteenth century and fully restored with UNESCO support between 1975 and 1982. It became a World Heritage Site in 1991. The monument is a stepped pyramid of about two million blocks of grey andesite stone, with no interior rooms: you experience it by walking around and up it.
Pilgrims climb clockwise through nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, symbolising the path from the world of desire to enlightenment. On this Borobudur tour from Yogyakarta you spend about two hours at the temple, which is enough for the galleries, the climb and photos. Is Borobudur worth visiting? For most travellers to Java it is the single unmissable sight.
The relief galleries and the 504 Buddha statues
The square terraces are lined with 2,672 carved relief panels, the longest series of Buddhist reliefs anywhere. Read in order, they show the law of cause and effect, the life of the Buddha and the long journey of a pilgrim seeking wisdom, with ships, palaces, musicians and village life of ancient Java carved in remarkable detail. Your guide picks out the scenes that matter so the stone stories make sense.
Above the galleries sit 504 life-size Buddha statues, each carved from a single block, in niches facing the four directions with different hand gestures. Many lost their heads over the centuries, which your guide explains as part of the monument's history. Allow time here: the reliefs are the part of Borobudur that most people rush, and the best part for anyone curious about Buddhist art.
The climb to the summit stupas
Access to the upper structure is now controlled to protect the stone, so a Borobudur temple climb needs a dedicated ticket, which the default option includes. From the last square gallery you step onto three circular terraces with 72 perforated bell-shaped stupas, each sheltering a seated Buddha, arranged around the great central stupa at the very top.
The view from here is the reward: the Kedu Plain spreads out in green rice fields and palm groves, framed by the Menoreh hills and, on a clear day, the cones of Merapi and Merbabu. The climb uses steep stone stairs and takes a moderate level of fitness. It is closed on Mondays for maintenance; on that day the guided visit stays on the temple grounds and lower levels.
Mendut and Pawon temples
Borobudur stands on a straight line with two smaller temples to the east, and the tour includes the possibility of a short optional visit to them on the way back. Mendut, about three kilometres away, is a tall shrine whose inner chamber holds three large carved stone figures, a seated Buddha flanked by two bodhisattvas, among the finest statues of ancient Java.
Pawon is a small, elegant temple between the two, decorated with carvings of celestial beings and wishing trees. During the Vesak festival, monks walk in procession from Mendut through Pawon to Borobudur, which shows how the three were planned together. Each visit takes only fifteen to twenty minutes, so they fit easily into a half-day Borobudur tour.
The drive from Yogyakarta through the Kedu Plain
Borobudur lies in Magelang regency, about forty kilometres northwest of Yogyakarta, which is why most travellers ask how to get to Borobudur without wasting half a day on buses. With hotel pickup the drive takes about an hour each way along country roads lined with rice terraces, small mosques and roadside stalls selling salak fruit and snacks.
Choose an early start time for cooler air and softer light on the stone; the best time to visit Borobudur is the dry season from May to October, while mornings are usually clearest all year. Afternoons in the rainy season often bring a short shower, so a light rain jacket is handy. Back in Yogyakarta you have the rest of the day for the Kraton, Malioboro Street and halal local dishes such as gudeg.
