Full Description

Borobudur Temple, the sunrise and the climb

Borobudur was built in the ninth century under the Sailendra dynasty and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, rise to a crown of perforated stupas, each holding a seated Buddha, and the walls carry thousands of relief panels that tell Buddhist stories. A Borobudur sunrise tour is popular because the temple sits in a bowl of volcanic hills, and the mist lifts around you as the light arrives.

Is the Borobudur climb worth it? Yes, especially early, when the terraces are quiet and the air is cool. Access to the upper terraces is controlled, so the temple ticket, the special footwear and the guide rules are handled with your driver, and the rules can change. Plan around two hours at the temple, and wear comfortable shoes with good grip because the stone steps are steep.

Stumbu Hill (Punthuk Setumbu) viewpoint

On the Stumbu Hill options you watch sunrise from a hilltop viewpoint facing Borobudur rather than from the temple itself. From here you see the stupas and the dome of the monument rising out of the morning mist, with Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu on the horizon. Many travellers find it the best place for photographs of the whole temple.

The short walk up the hill starts in darkness, so a small torch or a phone light helps. After sunrise the tour goes on to walk the terraces of Borobudur with a guide. If you specifically want the sunrise from inside the temple, choose the option that says so, since the options differ in where you stand and what is included.

Prambanan Temple Compound

Prambanan dates from the ninth century and is the largest Hindu temple compound in Indonesia. The central Shiva temple stands almost 47 metres tall, flanked by temples for Vishnu and Brahma, and long relief panels on the balustrades tell the story of the Ramayana. Damage from the 2006 earthquake has been carefully repaired, and the site is UNESCO listed.

Local legend links the compound to the princess Roro Jonggrang, and the main temple carries her name. Allow about two hours to walk the courtyards, climb the steps of the main temples where open and photograph the towers. The main Roro Jonggrang temple is closed on Mondays, so the rest of the compound is what you see on that day.

Planning your Borobudur and Prambanan day trip from Yogyakarta

Borobudur is around an hour and a half from Yogyakarta by road, and Prambanan is on the eastern side of the city, so a Yogyakarta to Borobudur and Prambanan tour is the easiest way to see both on one day. Our options start as early as 3:15 for the sunrise version, and the daytime version leaves in the morning. Opening hours and access rules change by season, so we confirm your final pickup time the day before.

The options differ in what is included. In the most complete option all temple tickets and breakfast are covered, while in the others temple admission is paid on the day and your driver arranges the tickets. The best time to visit Borobudur is at sunrise or first thing in the morning, before the heat and the crowds. If you only want the monument, the half-day option covers Borobudur without Prambanan.
