Full Description

Jomblang Cave and the beam of light

Jomblang is a vertical cave in the karst hills of Gunungkidul, formed when the roof of a huge cavern collapsed into a sinkhole about sixty metres deep. Visitors are lowered on a rope in a harness, and at the bottom a tunnel leads to a chamber where sunlight pours through the opening above in a single shaft. Many people call it the light of heaven, and it is the reason a Jomblang Cave tour is so popular.

The beam is at its strongest around midday, which is why the trip is timed to arrive at the cave in the morning. Trained staff handle the ropes and helmets and your guide explains the cave as you go. Is Jomblang Cave worth visiting? Yes, if you are comfortable with a rope descent, because few places in Java feel as otherworldly. There are health and age limits, so ask us before you book.

Pindul Cave and the Oyo River

Pindul is a shallow, water-filled cave of several hundred metres on the Oyo River, and a Pindul Cave tubing trip is one of the most relaxed adventures near Yogyakarta. You sit in a large rubber ring, wear a life jacket and helmet, and drift slowly through the cave while a guide points out the limestone formations above your head.

The water is calm and green, and the cave opens to daylight at intervals. Near the exit you pass a small waterfall on the river, and there is usually free time for photos. The cave is best explored in the middle of the day, with a change of clothes waiting in the van.

Gunungkidul, the karst landscape south of Yogyakarta

Both caves lie in Gunungkidul, a limestone region of dry hills, forests and underground rivers that is recognised as a geopark. The drive from Yogyakarta takes about an hour and a half each way, through villages and farmland, and it is a relaxing way to see the countryside south of the city.

Because the caves are at different locations, the day is planned as a loop with lunch in between. The best time to visit is the dry season, roughly May to September, when water levels are safer and the light shaft is clearer. In heavy rain, cave access can be limited for safety.

How the day works and what to expect
