Full Description
Tanah Lot Temple on its sea rock
Tanah Lot, in Beraban village in the Tabanan regency, is one of the most important sea temples of Bali. Its name means land in the sea: the temple stands on a rocky outcrop shaped by the waves, joined to the shore only at low tide. According to tradition it was founded in the 16th century by a wandering Hindu priest who, struck by the beauty of the spot, asked local fishermen to build a shrine to the gods of the sea here.
Tanah Lot is one of a chain of sea temples built along the south-west coast, each said to be in sight of the next, together guarding Bali from the forces of the ocean. The temple itself is reserved for Balinese Hindu worshippers, but visitors can walk to the base of the rock when the sea is low. If you are asking whether Tanah Lot is worth visiting, the view at sunset is the answer.
The holy spring and the sea snakes
At the foot of the rock, a freshwater spring rises from the stone just metres from the salty sea, which Balinese Hindus consider a miracle and a source of holy water. At low tide visitors can cross the wet rocks to the spring, where temple priests give a blessing with a splash of water and grains of rice pressed onto the forehead, in return for a small donation.
Legend says that the priest who founded the temple created sea snakes from his sash to guard it from evil spirits, and black-and-white banded sea kraits still live in the crevices of the cliffs opposite. Your guide explains these stories and the role of the temple in Balinese religion. Because tides change daily, the guide checks the timing so you can reach the spring when it is safe.
Batu Bolong and the cliff-top paths
A short walk north along the cliff top leads to Pura Batu Bolong, a small shrine built on a natural rock arch through which the waves rush. From the paths between the two temples you have the classic view of Tanah Lot with the Indian Ocean behind it, and this is where most visitors gather for sunset.
Sunset in Bali is around 18:00 to 18:30 all year, and the tour is timed so that you are in place as the sky changes colour. The best time to visit Tanah Lot is exactly now, at the end of the day, when the light turns the rock and the waves gold and pink. Wear shoes with grip, as the rocks near the water are slippery, and keep an eye on the waves, which can surge without warning.
The market stalls and the drive to Tabanan
The path from the car park to the temple runs through rows of small shops and stalls selling handmade trinkets, sarongs and textiles, wood carvings, Balinese musical instruments and snacks. It is a good place to buy souvenirs, and bargaining with a smile is normal.
Tanah Lot lies about an hour's drive from Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu, depending on traffic, through towns and rice fields on the way to Tabanan. Many people search for how to get to Tanah Lot without a car: this tour solves it with hotel pickup, a small group and a guide, and brings you back after dark. The total time is about five hours.
