Full Description
Water Blow in Nusa Dua
Water Blow is a natural rock platform on the Nusa Dua coast where powerful swells from the Indian Ocean slam into the cliff and burst into tall sprays of white water. It is a short, easy stop at the start of the tour, with a paved path along the edge and a good view of the open sea. The spray is strongest at high tide and when the waves are large.
Wind and surf make it feel fresh even on hot days, and the spot is popular with visitors who like to photograph the moment the wave hits. Allow about forty-five minutes here, including the walk along the viewpoint. Hold your phone or camera firmly, as the mist can reach the railings, and wear shoes with good grip because the stones become wet and slippery.
Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park
Garuda Wisnu Kencana, usually called GWK, is a cultural park on the limestone plateau of the Bukit peninsula. Its centrepiece is a huge statue of the Hindu god Vishnu riding the mythical bird Garuda, which rises well above one hundred metres and can be seen from far away. Around it, open plazas, gardens and exhibition spaces show Balinese art, dance and culture.
A private GWK tour is a good way to see the park at your own speed. Plan about an hour for the statue, the main plaza and photographs, with a moderate amount of walking on wide paths. The park is open daily, usually from morning until evening, and mornings are the quietest. Because the stop is included in the ticket package, you do not need to queue for entry or arrange separate tickets.
Melasti Beach
Melasti Beach lies on the southern coast near Ungasan, in a deep bay between tall white limestone cliffs. The sand is soft, the water a clear turquoise, and a road cut into the cliff leads down to the shore. After the cultural stops, it is a relaxing place to sit by the sea, stretch your legs, take photographs and enjoy a cold drink from our vehicle.
The beach is calm and open, suited to families and couples who want a slower hour in the middle of the day. Allow about an hour. Bring beachwear if you wish to swim or paddle, sunscreen and a hat. Strong winds or rain can change the conditions on this stretch of coast, so your guide may adjust the time spent here. Melasti is at its best in the dry season.
Uluwatu Temple
Uluwatu Temple, or Pura Luhur Uluwatu, stands on a cliff edge about seventy metres above the Indian Ocean, and it is among the most important sea temples in Bali, built to protect the island from spirits of the ocean. A paved path follows the clifftop with views over the surf, and carved gateways frame the sky. Visitors wear a sarong and sash, which are provided on site.
Many travellers ask whether Uluwatu Temple is worth visiting, and the answer is yes, especially in the late afternoon when the light turns golden. Long-tailed macaques live in the temple grounds and are known for snatching sunglasses, phones and hats, so keep your belongings secure. Plan about forty minutes at the temple, with moderate walking on uneven paths and steps.
Kecak fire dance at sunset
The tour ends with the Kecak dance in the open-air amphitheatre at the cliff, just before sunset. A large circle of men chants a rhythmic cak-cak-cak without any orchestra, while dancers act out an episode from an ancient Hindu epic, with a fire scene in the middle. It is a distinctive performance, and the setting above the sea at dusk makes it memorable. Entry to the show is included.
The performance lasts about one hour and starts around sunset, so book seats in the right place early. Our guide arranges the timing of the day so that you arrive at the temple with enough time to see the grounds before taking your seat. After the show, the drive back to your hotel takes about an hour, depending on traffic and where you stay.
