Full Description
The Montserrat mountain
Montserrat, the serrated mountain, rises abruptly from the plain about 50 kilometres northwest of Barcelona. Its rounded pink towers of conglomerate rock were formed from ancient river deposits and sculpted by wind and rain into hundreds of strange shapes, with the highest peak, Sant Jeroni, at about 1,236 metres. The massif has been a natural park since 1987.
A Montserrat day trip from Barcelona takes about an hour by road each way, and the first photo stop below the mountain shows why the landscape has inspired legends and pilgrims for centuries. Temperatures on the mountain are often more extreme than in the city, so bring a layer even on sunny days.
The cogwheel train
In the full package, the coach takes you to the lower station, where you board the cogwheel rack train for a 12-minute ride up to the monastery. The track climbs steep slopes above the Llobregat valley, and the large windows give wide views of the river, the plain and the rock walls above.
Many visitors ask how to get to Montserrat from Barcelona in the most scenic way, and the cogwheel train is the classic answer. It is also comfortable and step-free at the stations. The simpler options of this tour drive up to the monastery by coach instead, which is quicker but without the train experience. If the views are your priority, choose the full package and sit on the valley side of the carriage.
Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery and Basilica
The Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat was founded in the 11th century and is still a living monastery. Much of it was destroyed by French troops in 1811 and rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries, but the Basilica keeps its grand Renaissance layout, with a richly decorated nave, golden lamps and a striking facade on the main square.
Your guide explains the history of the abbey, the role it played in Catalan culture and the daily life of the monks, and you enter the Basilica through a separate fast-track entrance. On Sundays and religious celebrations the Basilica may close to visitors during services. The famous boys' choir, one of the oldest in Europe, sings here on some days, but tickets for its performances are not included.
The Black Madonna
The Black Madonna, known locally as La Moreneta, is a Romanesque wooden statue of the Virgin and Child from the 12th century, darkened over time. She is the patron saint of Catalonia, and pilgrims come from all over the world to see her in her chapel high above the Basilica's altar.
Visits to the Black Madonna run in time slots and can have long queues, which is why the full package includes a timed ticket arranged for you. You climb a richly decorated staircase to the chapel and pass in front of the statue, where many visitors touch the orb she holds. Black Madonna Montserrat tickets are not included in the simpler options.
Viewpoints, trails and free time
After the guided part you have about an hour of free time in the full package, and about two hours in the other options. Popular choices are the Apostles viewpoint, the short walk to Saint Michael's Cross with a wide view of the monastery, or the Sant Joan funicular to the higher trails (ticket not included). The Montserrat Museum, with art from many periods, is another option at extra cost.
Near the monastery square, local stalls sell honey, dried figs and fresh mató cheese, and a bakery offers coca and other Catalan pastries. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, since there is a lot of walking on slopes. The coach then takes you back to Barcelona, arriving in the afternoon.
