Full Description
The Sagrada Família, Gaudí's life's work
The Basílica de la Sagrada Família was begun in 1882, and a year later the young architect Antoni Gaudí took charge of the project. He devoted more than forty years to it, working almost exclusively on the basilica in his final years, and he is buried in its crypt. When he died in 1926, less than a quarter was finished.
Funded by donations and visitor tickets, construction has continued ever since, guided by Gaudí's plaster models and drawings. In 2010 the church was consecrated as a basilica, and parts of it belong to the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Gaudí's works. The central Tower of Jesus Christ, planned at about 172 metres, marks the final phase of work.
The Nativity and Passion façades
Your Sagrada Família tour begins outside, where the guide reads the stone like a book. The Nativity façade, the only one Gaudí saw largely completed, faces the sunrise and bursts with life: angels, animals, plants and scenes of the birth of Christ carved in rich, flowing detail.
On the opposite side, the Passion façade faces the sunset and tells a very different story. Designed by the sculptor Josep Maria Subirachs in the late 20th century, its angular, almost bare figures show the last days of Christ. Comparing the two is one of the most memorable parts of a guided tour of the Sagrada Família.
Inside the basilica: a forest of stone and light
Entering the nave is the moment most visitors remember. Gaudí designed the columns to branch like trees, so the vaults above feel like a canopy of leaves. The pillars are made of different stones, from sandstone to porphyry, each chosen for the weight it carries.
The stained-glass windows change the mood through the day: cool blues and greens on the eastern side in the morning, warm reds and oranges on the western side in the afternoon. Many people ask whether the Sagrada Família is worth visiting inside; the answer is yes, and the guide shows you details you would easily miss alone.
Planning your visit: getting there, dress code and timing
The basilica stands in the Eixample district. To get to the Sagrada Família, take metro line 2 or 5 to Sagrada Família station, which exits right beside the building, or ride a sightseeing bus that stops nearby. Allow time for the airport-style security check at the entrance.
As an active church, it asks visitors to dress respectfully, with shoulders covered and no very short shorts. The best time to visit is in the morning for fewer crowds, or in the late afternoon when the western windows glow. Sagrada Família tickets sell out days ahead in high season, so booking early is wise.
