Full Description
Montserrat Mountain
Montserrat means serrated mountain in Catalan, and the name is perfect: the massif rises abruptly from the Llobregat valley in a wall of rounded, finger-like pinnacles of pink conglomerate rock, formed from river sediments millions of years ago and sculpted by wind and rain. The highest point, Sant Jeroni, reaches 1,236 metres, and the whole area is protected as a natural park, criss-crossed by trails and dotted with the remains of old hermitages.
The drive from Barcelona takes about an hour and climbs a winding road with superb views of the rock formations. Many travellers wonder whether Montserrat is worth visiting on a short city break: for the scenery alone it is one of the best day trips from Barcelona, and the contrast between the busy city and the silence of the mountain is striking.
Montserrat Monastery
Perched on a ledge at about 720 metres, the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat was founded in the 11th century around a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat. It grew into one of the great pilgrimage sites of Spain, was largely destroyed by French troops during the Peninsular War in the early 19th century and was rebuilt in the decades that followed. A community of monks still lives and prays here today.
Your one-hour guided tour covers the monastery level of the mountain: the main square, the facades of the abbey buildings, the pilgrims' path and the stories behind the legends of the mountain. Note that the monastery refers to the whole complex of buildings on the ledge, not only the private quarters where the monks live, which are closed to visitors.
Basilica of Montserrat
Entry to the basilica is included in this tour. Consecrated in the late 16th century and restored after the 19th-century destruction, the church is entered through an atrium with a richly carved Renaissance-style facade. Inside, the single nave is dark and solemn, lit by hanging lamps and dominated by the high altar, above which the Romanesque statue of the Virgin, known as the Black Madonna or La Moreneta, sits in her throne room.
Your basilica ticket gives access to the nave, where you can admire the altar and the Madonna from a distance. The Throne Room, where pilgrims climb a staircase to stand next to the statue, and the choir performance are not included; tickets for them are limited and often sell out. If you would like to visit them, message us after booking and we will help you arrange Montserrat basilica tickets for those areas in advance.
Funiculars and Mountain Trails
Your three hours of free time are the best part of the day for many travellers. The Sant Joan funicular climbs steeply from the monastery to an upper station at about 1,000 metres, where easy, well-marked paths lead to viewpoints and old hermitages, and a longer trail continues to the summit of Sant Jeroni. The Santa Cova funicular descends instead towards the Holy Cave, where, according to legend, the statue of the Virgin was found by shepherds.
Funicular tickets are not included, so you can decide on the spot. If you prefer not to ride, a gentle walk to the Creu de Sant Miquel viewpoint takes about 20 minutes each way from the monastery and offers a wide panorama of the abbey against the cliffs. Wear good shoes; the trails are rocky in places.
Montserrat Museum and Lunch with a View
If you prefer culture to hiking, the Montserrat Museum, beside the main square, houses a surprisingly varied collection gathered by the monks over the centuries: archaeological pieces from ancient Egypt and the Near East, Gothic and Renaissance religious art, and a strong selection of Catalan and European paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries. One hour is enough to see the highlights.
The monastery level also has a self-service restaurant with panoramic windows, cafés and a small market where local farmers sell honey, cheese and mató, a fresh soft cheese typically served with honey. Food is not included in the tour, so you can eat where you like. Bring water and a light layer: the mountain is often a few degrees cooler and windier than Barcelona.
