Full Description
Medina Azahara: The Palace-City of the Caliphs
Medina Azahara, meaning the shining city, was founded in the 10th century by Abd al-Rahman III as the seat of the Caliphate of Córdoba. Built in a few decades on three terraces at the foot of the Sierra Morena, it combined a palace, government offices, mosque, gardens and homes for officials. The city was looted and abandoned early in the 11th century, then lay buried for nearly a thousand years until excavations began.
Today the ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important archaeological places in Spain. A Medina Azahara guided tour is the best way to read the stones, because much of the city is still being excavated and restored, and your guide shows you where the halls, streets and gardens once stood.
The Visitor Centre and the Rebuilt Halls
The modern visitor centre, half buried in the hillside, is a good starting point. It holds finds from the site, a video that rebuilds the 10th-century city and clear explanations of how the caliphate used the palace to show its power. The tour spends time here before moving up to the ruins, which helps you picture what you are about to see.
From the centre, a shuttle takes you to the monuments at the top of the site. The standout is the Salón Rico, the Rich Hall, a reception room rebuilt with carved stone panels covered in plant motifs. Your guide explains how ambassadors were received here, and why the architecture was designed to impress.
The Terraces, Gardens and Everyday Life
The upper terrace held the palace of the caliph, the middle terrace had the gardens and official buildings, and the lower terrace held the mosque and homes. Walking the paths and streets, you see the layout of a planned city, the water channels that fed the gardens and the foundations of houses and workshops. The guide explains how everyday life ran in the palace.
A visit takes about 3 hours, including the bus ride, the visitor centre and the guided visit. Wear a hat, bring water and put on comfortable shoes, as the site is open and the ground is uneven. The best time to visit Medina Azahara is spring or autumn, early in the day.
