Full Description

Viana Palace, the museum of patios

Viana Palace grew over five centuries from a 15th-century house into one of the grandest mansions of Córdoba. Successive noble families extended it, adding wings, courtyards and a garden, until it covered a whole block of the old town. They lived here until 1980, and the following year the palace was declared a national monument. Today it is open to the public as a museum, with its courtyards as the main attraction.

The palace is called the museum of patios because it brings together, in one place, almost every style of Cordovan courtyard, from simple working patios to elegant Renaissance arcades. Is Viana Palace worth visiting? If you cannot be in Córdoba for the May patio festival, this is the best way to see the tradition in full colour on any day of the year.

The twelve courtyards

Each of the twelve patios has its own name and story. The Reception Patio welcomes visitors with a fountain and arcades; the Patio of the Orange Trees is fragrant in spring; the Cats' Patio, the oldest, recalls a shared neighbourhood courtyard with flower pots on every wall; and the Patio of the Columns, the largest, opens into a bright square of stone and greenery. Others feature wells, chapels, iron grilles and a fountain with a statue of a lady.

Walking from one to the next, you notice how light, water and plants were used to keep the house cool in the burning Córdoba summer. Geraniums, bougainvillea, jasmine and climbing roses cover the whitewashed walls, and pebble mosaics decorate the floors. Allow time for photos, as every corner offers a new frame.

The garden and the palace interior

Behind the courtyards lies a walled garden with tall palms, cypress and orange trees, box hedges and shaded paths, a quiet place to sit after the patios. It was laid out in the formal style of the old noble estates and keeps some of the oldest trees in the city centre.

Your ticket covers the patios and the garden. The interior rooms of the palace, with collections of tapestries, embossed leather, tiles, paintings, furniture and a historic library, are not included, but tickets can be bought on site if you want to see them; the interior is shown in small guided groups. Viana Palace opening hours vary by season, and the palace is closed on Mondays, so plan your date accordingly. A morning visit is the coolest and quietest.

The Santa Marina quarter

Viana Palace stands in the Santa Marina quarter, a traditional neighbourhood north of the old town, about 15 minutes on foot from the Mosque-Cathedral. Its lanes are calmer than the streets near the river, with small squares, local cafés and one of the Gothic-Mudéjar churches built after the 13th-century conquest.

If you are asking how to get to Viana Palace, you can walk from the centre through the old town, take a short taxi ride, or use one of the city buses that stop nearby. The visit combines well with a guided morning at the Mosque-Cathedral or an afternoon patios tour in the Alcázar Viejo quarter, giving you a full picture of the courtyards of Córdoba in one day.
