Full Description

Casa Vicens, Gaudi's first house

Casa Vicens was built between 1883 and 1885 for the Vicens family and is often described as the first house that shows Gaudi's own voice. It mixes Moorish-inspired forms with bold colour, geometric tiles and a playful use of nature. Casa Vicens tickets give access to a house that was closed to the public for over a century and reopened as a museum in 2017.

The house was declared part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of Gaudi's works, and many visitors come to Barcelona specifically to see how his style began. Take your time on the ground floor and upper floors, because every room has a different pattern, ceiling or window worth looking at.

Facade, tiles and garden

The exterior is the most recognisable part. Chequered ceramic tiles in green and white alternate with rough stone, and orange-yellow tiles printed with marigolds, the flower that once grew on the site, decorate the walls. Ironwork railings echo the leaf shapes of the garden, and towers and turrets sit above the roofline.

The garden gives you a quiet place to look back at the facade, and the whole house feels like a jewel box squeezed into a narrow street in Gracia. Photographers should arrive early in the day for softer light and fewer people.

Interiors, audio guide and exhibitions

Inside, the highlights include the smoking room with its Moorish-style ceiling, the dining room and the painted walls and ceilings that use nature as their theme. Your general entry ticket comes with an audio guide, which you download to your phone in advance, so bring headphones. The audio guide is available in several languages, including English.

The permanent exhibition explains how the house was restored and how Gaudi worked, and temporary exhibitions change through the year. Depending on the option you choose, you can also add a snack at the museum cafe.

Visiting Gracia and how to get there

Casa Vicens sits in Gracia, a neighbourhood of small squares, independent shops and terraces. The nearest metro stations are Fontana and Lesseps, and the house is not far from Park Guell. Combining the visit with a stroll through Gracia's squares makes a relaxed half day.

Most visitors spend about an hour in the house. Opening days and hours change by season, so check the times shown in the booking panel when you choose your date. Afterwards, the cafes around Placa de la Vila de Gracia and Placa del Sol are good places to sit for a while.
