Full Description
Port of Malaga and Muelle Uno
The port of Malaga is one of the oldest on the Mediterranean, used by Phoenicians who founded the city as Malaka nearly 3,000 years ago. Its old quays were redeveloped in the 2010s into a waterfront promenade, Muelle Uno, lined with palm trees, shops and restaurants, and the Palmeral de las Sorpresas, a shaded walkway that links the port directly with the city centre.
Your catamaran boards in this port area, so getting there is simple: from the cathedral or Calle Larios it is a walk of about ten to fifteen minutes. Before boarding, look out for the multicoloured glass cube of the Centre Pompidou Málaga at the end of Muelle Uno, one of the most photographed modern landmarks of the waterfront. The exact pier for your boat appears on your booking confirmation.
Malaga's skyline from the sea: the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle
Once the catamaran leaves the harbour, the view that makes this Malaga boat trip special opens up. On the hillside above the old town stands the Alcazaba, an 11th-century Moorish palace-fortress with layered walls and gardens, and higher up, linked to it by a fortified wall, is Gibralfaro Castle, built in the 14th century on a site once crowned by a Phoenician lighthouse, which gave the hill its name.
From the water you see how the two fortresses dominate the bay and why they guarded the city for centuries. As the sun gets lower, the stone walls turn golden and then pink. If you plan to visit them on land, the Alcazaba is usually open daily from the morning to the evening, with longer hours in summer, and is well worth an hour or two.
Malaga Cathedral and the old town
Rising above the rooftops of the historic centre is Malaga Cathedral, built between 1528 and 1782 on the site of the city's former great mosque. Its south tower was never completed, which is why locals affectionately call the building La Manquita, the one-armed lady. From the sea its single finished tower, about 84 metres high, is the easiest landmark to pick out.
Around it lies the compact old town, with the marble-paved Calle Larios, the Roman Theatre at the foot of the Alcazaba and the city's main museums. Seeing it from the water at sunset gives a sense of how the city climbs from the shore to the hills, a view you simply cannot get from street level. Many visitors take this sunset cruise on their first evening to get their bearings.
La Farola lighthouse and La Malagueta beach
At the eastern edge of the port stands La Farola, the white lighthouse completed in 1817. It is often said to be one of the very few lighthouses in Spain with a feminine name, and it has become a symbol of the city. Just beyond it begins La Malagueta, the city beach, with its sand, beach restaurants and the promenade that continues east towards the old fishing districts.
The catamaran follows this stretch of coast, giving you a long, open view of the beaches with the mountains of the Montes de Málaga behind them. On clear evenings the colours of the sky reflect off the calm water, and this is the moment most passengers move to the deck rail for photos while the music plays in the background.
Sunset on the Mediterranean: best time to go
Malaga is known for its sunny, mild climate, so a sunset trip on the Costa del Sol is possible in every season. Departure times follow the sunset, which is why they change through the year: the booking panel shows the current time. In summer the evenings are warm and long, while in winter the trip is shorter (one hour in December and January) and a jacket is useful on deck.
Is a sunset catamaran in Malaga worth it? For many travellers it is the most relaxing way to see the city: no walking, wide views and soft evening light. Spring and autumn are often the best time to book, with mild air and calm water. The tour runs rain or shine, and departures can occasionally be delayed by up to an hour.
