Full Description
PortAventura Park: Mediterrània and Polynesia
Opened in 1995 between Salou and Vila-seca, PortAventura Park is the largest theme park in Spain and one of the most visited in Europe. You enter through Mediterrània, a recreated Catalan fishing village with whitewashed houses, a harbour and seafront cafés, where you also find one of the park's high-speed launch coasters. It is a good place to pick up a park map and check show times for the day.
Next comes Polynesia, a tropical world of palm trees, thatched huts and lush gardens. Here you find the Tutuki Splash water ride, which plunges boats down a volcano-themed drop, the swinging boat Kontiki and a bird show. Polynesia is the coolest and shadiest corner of the park, perfect for a break in the midday heat.
China and México: The Big Thrill Rides
The China world is the realm of the giant coasters. Shambhala, a hypercoaster of about 76 metres with a first drop that reaches roughly 134 km/h, is among the tallest in Europe, and Dragon Khan, the park's legendary coaster with eight inversions, has thrilled riders since opening day. Temples, gardens and a big theatre complete this beautifully themed area. A minimum height applies on the biggest rides.
México brings Mayan pyramids, colonial streets and the Hurakan Condor drop tower, which lifts riders around 100 metres before a free fall. The El Diablo mine train is a gentler family coaster, and Mexican-themed restaurants and markets line the square. Plan to visit the major rides early or late in the day, when queues are shorter.
Far West and the Young Children's World
The Far West recreates a frontier town with timber facades, a railway station and a riverboat on the lake. Stampida, a wooden racing coaster where two trains duel side by side, is a favourite with teenagers, while Grand Canyon Rapids and Silver River Flume offer refreshing water rides that leave few guests dry. Street shows and live music make this one of the liveliest areas of the park.
Families with small children will love the dedicated world for young visitors, with gentle rides, play areas, a small water zone and character meet-and-greets. Many attractions across the park are also suitable for children over about one metre tall, so the whole family can share the day. Live shows run through the day in theatres and squares across all six worlds.
Getting to PortAventura and Planning Your Day
How to get to PortAventura: the park has its own railway station on the coast line, with regional trains from Barcelona taking around 1 hour 20 minutes, and drivers reach it in about an hour via a direct exit from the AP-7 motorway. Reus Airport is only 15 minutes away. Parking is paid separately, and you simply present your voucher at the entrance turnstiles.
