Full Description

City Hall Square and the Central Market

The ride begins at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Valencia's grand central square, framed by the early 20th-century City Hall and the Post Office building with its glass dome. Every March during the Fallas festival, this square shakes at 14:00 each day with the mascletà, a thunderous daytime firework display that draws huge crowds.

A few minutes away is the Central Market, a masterpiece of Valencian modernism opened in 1928, with iron columns, colourful ceramic tiles and a glass dome. Inside, hundreds of stalls sell oranges, tiger nuts for horchata, fresh fish, saffron and the short-grain rice used for paella. It is busiest in the morning, so this Valencia city highlights tour passes when the market is at its liveliest.

The Silk Exchange and Valencia Cathedral

Opposite the market stands the Llotja de la Seda, the Silk Exchange, built between 1482 and 1533 when Valencia was one of the richest trading cities of the Mediterranean. Its Hall of Columns, with twisted stone pillars rising like palm trees to the vaulted ceiling, is one of the finest civil Gothic buildings in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

The longest stop, about 30 minutes, is Valencia Cathedral, begun in 1262 on the site of the old mosque. Its three doors show Romanesque, Gothic and baroque styles, and the octagonal Miguelete bell tower rises above the Plaza de la Virgen. Every Thursday at noon, the Water Tribunal, a farmers' court with centuries of history, still meets at the Apostles' Door to settle irrigation disputes.

Torres de Serranos and the Old City Walls

The Torres de Serranos were built between 1392 and 1398 as the main gate on the northern side of the medieval city walls, facing the road to Barcelona and the mountains of Serranía. Their twin polygonal towers and fine Gothic tracery made them a ceremonial entrance for kings and ambassadors, and they later served as a prison.

Most of Valencia's walls were demolished in 1865 to let the city grow, so this gate and the Torres de Quart in the west are the great survivors of the medieval defences. From your bike you get a clear view of the towers from the riverbed, and the guide explains how the old city was laid out. Climbing the towers is possible on another visit for a view over the rooftops of El Carmen.

The Turia Gardens and the Palau de la Música

After a devastating flood in 1957, Valencia diverted the Turia River south of the city and turned the empty riverbed into a long green park of about nine kilometres. Today the Turia Gardens wind under the old stone bridges with cycle paths, orange trees, palm groves, fountains and sports fields, making them perfect for a Turia Gardens bike tour without traffic.

Along the way you pass the Palau de la Música, the concert hall opened in 1987, whose long glass vault reflects the gardens and pools in front of it. The guide stops at quiet corners locals love, with time for photos. This green ribbon is the reason cycling in Valencia feels so easy and safe: you cross the city almost without meeting a car.

City of Arts and Sciences and the Pont de la Mar

At the eastern end of the gardens rises the City of Arts and Sciences, a cluster of futuristic white buildings opened from 1998 onwards. You ride around the eye-shaped Hemisfèric, the ribbed Science Museum, the soaring Palau de les Arts opera house and the Umbracle garden walkway, with about 30 minutes to take photos among the turquoise pools.

On the way back, the route crosses the Pont de la Mar, a stone bridge built in the late 16th century and later turned into a pedestrian crossing decorated with statues. From there you ride back to City Hall through the modern centre. It is the perfect finish for a guided bike tour in Valencia, linking the medieval city with its boldest modern architecture in one morning.
