Overview

This Bosphorus night cruise is a two-hour guided loop from the Eminönü waterfront, timed so you leave in the last light of the day and come back with the whole city lit up. From the heated lounge or the open deck you pass the Galata Tower skyline, Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan Palace and Ortaköy Mosque, slip under the Bosphorus Bridge, follow the Asian shore past Anadolu Fortress, Küçüksu Pavilion and Beylerbeyi Palace, and return by the Maiden's Tower and Topkapı Palace. A live guide in English narrates the whole way, and the 18:00 departure includes tea and cookies on board. It is a shared cruise, good value for couples, families and first-time visitors; no hotel pickup, but the pier is two minutes from the Eminönü tram stop.

Full Description

Eminönü and the Golden Horn at dusk

The cruise leaves from the Eminönü waterfront on the Golden Horn, beside the small Ahi Çelebi Mosque a few minutes west of the Galata Bridge, the busiest and most central of Istanbul's piers. As the boat pulls out you get the classic view that every Bosphorus cruise from Eminönü begins with: the Galata Bridge with its fishermen, the New Mosque behind you and the Galata Tower rising over the roofs of Karaköy, its stone cylinder lit from below as the sky darkens. The guide starts the commentary here, explaining how the Golden Horn sheltered the Byzantine and Ottoman fleets.

Choose the 18:00 departure in winter and you see this stretch at twilight; in summer the sun sets later and the lights come on while you are further up the strait. Either way, the first ten minutes along the Karaköy and Tophane shore, passing the cruise port and the Kılıç Ali Pasha Mosque, are the best moment for photos of the historic peninsula behind the boat.

Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan Palace and Ortaköy Mosque

The European shore between Kabataş and Ortaköy is where the night cruise earns its name. Dolmabahçe Palace, built in the 1850s as the sultans' new residence in European style, stretches for some 600 metres along the water, and after dark its white marble façade, the Dolmabahçe Mosque and the clock tower are floodlit in warm gold with reflections that reach almost to the boat. A little further on comes Çırağan Palace, the 1870s palace that is now a hotel, and then Ortaköy Mosque, a small baroque mosque standing right on the quay with the first bridge rising directly behind it.

This is the stretch everyone searches for when planning a Bosphorus cruise at night, and the boat slows here so you can photograph the palaces from the open deck. The guide tells the story of the move from Topkapı to Dolmabahçe and of the lively square at Ortaköy, a good place to return to on another evening.

Under the Bosphorus Bridge to Bebek and Rumeli Fortress

Passing under the Bosphorus Bridge, officially the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, is the moment children remember: the 1,560-metre suspension bridge opened in 1973 as the first fixed link between Europe and Asia, and at night its cables and towers are lit in slowly changing colours. From the deck you look straight up at the underside of the deck as the boat glides beneath it. Beyond the bridge the European shore turns residential and expensive, with the waterside mansions of Arnavutköy and the sheltered bay of Bebek, where yachts sit at anchor beneath the lights of the hillside.

The turning point of the route is Rumeli Fortress, the castle Mehmed II built in 1452 on the narrowest part of the Bosphorus to control the strait before the conquest of Constantinople. Its great round towers are lit at night and look even more massive from the water than from the shore road. Here the boat crosses to the Asian side.

The Asian shore: Anadolu Fortress, Küçüksu Pavilion and Beylerbeyi Palace

Coming back down the Asian shore you first pass Anadolu Fortress, the smaller and older fortress built by Bayezid I in the 1390s at the mouth of the Göksu stream, with a village of wooden houses wrapped around it. Next to it stands the Küçüksu Pavilion, a small ornate summer lodge of the 1850s set right on the water, and then the long waterfront façade of Kuleli, the nineteenth-century military school with its twin pointed towers, lit up after dark.

The highlight of this bank is Beylerbeyi Palace, the summer palace of the sultans completed in 1865, whose marble façade and twin bathing pavilions on the quay are gently floodlit. Guides like to point out that it stands right below the Asian tower of the bridge you have just passed under. Compared with the European shore, this side is quieter and darker, which makes the lit palaces stand out more sharply and gives a different mood to the second half of the Bosphorus boat tour.

The Maiden's Tower and the return past Topkapı Palace

As the boat nears Üsküdar the Maiden's Tower appears on its tiny islet a couple of hundred metres off the Asian shore. A tower has stood here since Byzantine times as a customs post and lighthouse; the present white building dates from 1725 and was restored again in 2023. At night it is lit like a lantern in the middle of the dark water, and the boat passes close enough for good photos while the guide tells the legends attached to it. Across the strait, the historic peninsula comes into view with the domes and minarets of Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque spread along the skyline.

The last fifteen minutes follow the Sarayburnu point beneath the palace walls and back into the Golden Horn, with drop-off at Eminönü or Karaköy pier depending on availability. The whole loop takes about two hours, give or take fifteen minutes for wind and current, and ends in the city centre with trams and the Marmaray close by.

Good to know

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private cruise?

It is a shared sightseeing cruise on a passenger boat with indoor and outdoor seating. If you want a boat for your group alone, our Istanbul team can arrange a private yacht instead.

How long does the Bosphorus night cruise take?

About two hours from Eminönü back to Eminönü or Karaköy, with a possible variation of fifteen minutes because of wind and currents.

What is the difference between the 18:00 and 20:00 departures?

The 18:00 cruise leaves at twilight and includes tea and cookies on board; the 20:00 cruise runs in full darkness and does not include refreshments. Both follow the same route with a live guide.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. The pier is in the city centre at Eminönü, two minutes from the T1 tram, so most hotels in Sultanahmet, Sirkeci and Karaköy are within a short walk or tram ride.

What is included?

The two-hour guided cruise, live commentary in English (Russian also available), Wi-Fi, use of the heated lounge and open deck, and on the 18:00 departure tea and cookies. Other food and drinks and transfers are not included.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for adults and for children aged 4 to 7; infants up to 3 travel free on a parent's lap.

Is it suitable for children and for visitors with reduced mobility?

Yes, families love the lights and the bridge passage, and the boat is wheelchair accessible. Only people who suffer badly from seasickness should think twice, although the Bosphorus is usually calm.

Which landmarks do we see?

Galata Tower, Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan Palace, Ortaköy Mosque, the Bosphorus Bridge, Bebek, Rumeli Fortress, Anadolu Fortress, Küçüksu Pavilion, Beylerbeyi Palace, the Maiden's Tower and Topkapı Palace, all from the water.

What should I bring?

A warm layer or windproof jacket even in summer, comfortable shoes, your camera or phone, and a scarf in winter. Tea is served on the 18:00 cruise; you may bring snacks.

What happens in bad weather?

The boat has a heated indoor lounge, so the cruise goes ahead in rain. Only in a storm that closes the Bosphorus to passenger traffic do we move you to another day or refund the booking.

What is the best time of year for a Bosphorus cruise at night?

Any season works. In winter the 18:00 cruise is fully dark and the lights are dramatic; in summer the same cruise gives you sunset and dusk first, then the lit shores on the way back.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose the date and departure in the booking panel and send the request; our Istanbul team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the exact boarding instructions.
