Full Description
Kabataş, Dolmabahçe and the first palaces of the European shore
The yacht leaves from Kabataş, the pier next to the T1 tram stop and the funicular from Taksim, so it is easy to reach from Sultanahmet, Taksim or the Asian side. Within minutes you are passing Dolmabahçe Palace, the long white marble residence where the last sultans lived, with its seaside gate, clock tower and the small baroque Dolmabahçe Mosque beside it. The guide explains why the court left Topkapi for this waterfront in the nineteenth century, and from the deck you see the facade exactly as arriving ambassadors once did.
A little further on come the stadium on the shore, the Ottoman naval museum pier at Beşiktaş and then Çırağan Palace, a marble palace rebuilt as a hotel after a fire, whose arcaded facade glows in the late light. This is the moment to settle on the open deck with a glass of tea, because the first bridge is already in view.
Ortaköy and the Bosphorus Bridge
Ortaköy is one of the most photographed corners of the Bosphorus cruise: a small square on the water with the slim twin minarets of the Ortaköy Mosque, built in the 1850s in a light baroque style, framed by the enormous steel span of the Bosphorus Bridge immediately behind. The contrast between the delicate mosque and the first bridge across the strait, opened in 1973 and linking Ortaköy in Europe with Beylerbeyi in Asia, is the image most guests take away.
The yacht passes directly under the bridge, close enough to see the cables and hear the traffic, and the guide uses the moment to explain how the strait connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara and why the current runs so strongly here. On the far side the shore turns residential, with the waterside cafés of Kuruçeşme and the first wooden yalı mansions, the summer houses of Ottoman families.
Arnavutköy, Rumeli Fortress and the second bridge
Beyond Ortaköy the European shore becomes a line of painted wooden mansions at Arnavutköy and Bebek, where the water is calmest and the fish restaurants spill onto the quay. Then the hills close in and Rumeli Fortress appears, the great castle built by Mehmed II in 1452 in just four months to control the narrowest point of the Bosphorus before the conquest of Constantinople; its three massive towers and zigzag walls climb the slope, and from the water you understand at once why it was built here.
Directly across the strait stands the older and smaller Anatolian Fortress, and above both rises the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, the second crossing, which is the turning point of this Bosphorus sunset cruise. The yacht swings round beneath it and heads back down the Asian side as the light begins to turn gold.
The Asian shore: Beylerbeyi Palace, Üsküdar and the Maiden's Tower
On the way back the guide points out Beylerbeyi Palace, the white summer palace of the sultans on the Asian waterfront just below the first bridge, with its marble bathing pavilions on the quay, then the long shoreline of Üsküdar with its mosques by the great Ottoman architect Sinan and the ferry piers busy with the evening crossing. The Asian side is quieter and more residential, and this is where the sun sits low over the European hills, painting the water.
The last landmark on this side is the Maiden's Tower, the small white lighthouse tower on a rock a few hundred metres off Üsküdar, surrounded by legends about a princess kept there to escape a prophecy. The yacht slows for photographs as the tower's lights come on and the old-city skyline, with Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, fills the horizon behind it.
The Golden Horn, Galata Bridge and Galataport at sunset
The cruise ends at the mouth of the Golden Horn, where the strait opens into the Sea of Marmara. From the water you see the Galata Bridge with its fishermen, the Galata Tower on the hill behind, the spice-bazaar domes of Eminönü and, on the opposite side, the new cruise terminal and promenade at Galataport in Karaköy. This is usually when the sun drops behind the minarets of the old city, the sky turns orange and the first lights outline the mosques; the guide stops talking and lets everyone watch.
Our Istanbul team's advice is to keep a jacket for this part even in summer, because the breeze picks up at the mouth of the Golden Horn, and to stand at the stern for the widest view of the skyline. The yacht then returns to Kabataş, a few minutes away, where the tram and funicular are waiting.
The yacht, the snacks and the practical side
The boat is a 25-metre motor yacht with a carpeted indoor lounge, large windows, bathrooms and an open upper deck with seating, and because the group is limited to thirty guests there is always a place at the rail. The crew serve a tray of cookies, Turkish baklava and a platter of seasonal fruit soon after departure, with lemonade or fresh fruit juice, tea and coffee available throughout; as everywhere in Istanbul the food is halal.
The cruise runs in most weather, and the schedule can change daily depending on conditions, so we confirm the departure the day before on WhatsApp. Luggage, large bags and backpacks cannot be brought on board, the boat is not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers, and infants sit on a parent's lap. For the best photographs bring a lens hood or simply shade the lens against the low sun.
