Full Description
Dubai Marina, the Waterfront City
Dubai Marina is one of the largest man-made marinas in the world, a canal about three kilometres long dug from the desert along the coast in the early 2000s and lined with dozens of high-rise towers. Among them stands the twisting tower that turns a full 90 degrees from base to top, one of the most photographed buildings in the city, and the promenade of Marina Walk with its cafés and bridges.
Is a Dubai Marina cruise worth it? From the water you see the towers rising on both sides at once, something impossible from the promenade. The boat moves slowly through the canal so you can take photos of the reflections, especially at sunset when the glass facades glow orange. After dark the whole marina lights up, which is why the evening departures are the most popular.
Ain Dubai and Bluewaters Island
Leaving the marina, the boat heads towards Bluewaters Island, a small artificial island just off the JBR beach. Its centrepiece is Ain Dubai, a 250-metre observation wheel and one of the tallest of its kind on earth. Its slender white spokes and pods make a striking silhouette against the sunset and a dramatic subject for photos from sea level.
Bluewaters is linked to the mainland by a pedestrian bridge and is lined with shops and promenades, but the best way to appreciate the size of the wheel is from the water. The boat slows down in front of the island so you can frame the wheel with the marina skyline behind it. This Ain Dubai boat tour moment is often the favourite photo of the evening.
Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR)
Jumeirah Beach Residence, known simply as JBR, is a long line of residential towers built along nearly two kilometres of beachfront between the marina and the sea. At ground level runs The Walk, a lively promenade of shops and cafés, with an open public beach in front where families swim and sunbathe throughout the year.
From the boat you see JBR from the sea side, with the beach in the foreground and the marina towers rising behind it, a view that shows how the district was planned as a city by the water. In the evening the promenade lights and the towers' windows create a sparkling backdrop. If you want to explore on foot afterwards, JBR is a short walk from the boarding point.
Dubai Harbour and Views towards Palm Jumeirah
The cruise continues past Dubai Harbour, the newest marine district on this stretch of coast, located between JBR and the base of Palm Jumeirah. It includes a large marina for leisure boats and a modern cruise terminal, and its breakwaters give the boat sheltered water for a smooth ride. Look west to see the hotel towers on the crescent of Palm Jumeirah lining the horizon.
The best time to take this cruise is the sunset departure from October to April, when evenings are mild and the open deck is pleasant. In summer, the after-dark departure is more comfortable, and the air-conditioned lounge offers a cool retreat. The boat then turns back into the marina, where the illuminated towers welcome you at the end of the hour.
