Full Description
The red dunes and the dune drive
Beyond the last suburbs of Dubai, the land gives way to a sea of red-orange sand, coloured by iron oxide and shaped by the wind into tall, rolling dunes. The safari begins with hotel pickup by 4x4 in the afternoon and a drive of about an hour to the desert, where the driver lowers the tyre pressure before heading into the sand.
The dune drive lasts 30 to 45 minutes, with the vehicle climbing crests and sliding down steep faces in a mix of excitement and laughter. The driver stops at a high point for photos and sandboarding, where you slide down the soft slopes on a board. Many visitors ask whether an overnight desert safari in Dubai is worth it compared with an evening one; the extra hours in the dunes are the answer.
The desert camp and its welcome
The camp is set among the dunes, built in the style of a traditional Bedouin encampment with low seating, carpets and lanterns. You are welcomed with gahwa, the cardamom-scented Arabic coffee, and luqaimat, small golden dumplings drizzled with date syrup, along with seasonal fruit, Arabic bread and tea. Women can have their hands decorated with henna.
Short camel rides are available around the camp and can be repeated as often as you like, a favourite with children. Wi-Fi is available at the camp, though most guests prefer to switch off and enjoy the silence. A night desert guide stays with the group until morning and is happy to answer questions about desert life.
Evening shows and BBQ dinner
As darkness falls, the camp comes alive with traditional entertainment. Arabian horses show their elegance and skill, a falconer demonstrates the bond with the falcon, the national bird of the United Arab Emirates, and performers present the Yola, an Emirati folk dance in which wooden rifles are spun and tossed in rhythm. The evening ends with a dramatic fire show under the stars.
Dinner is a generous BBQ buffet with grilled meats, salads, rice and Emirati and Arabic dishes, served with unlimited mineral water and soft drinks. All the food is halal, and vegetarian dishes are always on the buffet. Dining in the open air of the desert, with the shows around you, is the heart of this Dubai desert camp experience.
Stargazing and the night in your tent
Far from the city lights, the desert sky is remarkably dark, and on clear nights you can see bright planets, constellations and, on moonless nights, the faint band of the Milky Way. During the stargazing session, a guide sets up a telescope and explains how desert travellers once used the stars to find their way.
You then retire to your private air-conditioned tent, furnished with comfortable beds and with showers, towels, toiletries and slippers nearby. Desert nights are calm and quiet, and from November to March they can be cool, so a light jumper is useful. The best time for a desert safari in Dubai is from October to April, when the days are warm and the nights pleasant.
Sunrise camel trek and Arabic breakfast
Before dawn, the night guide wakes the camp for a gentle camel trek into the dunes. As the sky turns from deep blue to pink and gold, the sun rises over the sand, lighting up the ridges and casting long shadows. It is the quietest and most beautiful moment of the whole trip, and a highlight for photographers.
Back at the camp, a traditional Arabic breakfast is served with tea or coffee, a relaxed moment to share the night's stories. Then the 4x4 drives you back to your hotel in Dubai, arriving in the morning. Quad bike and dune buggy rides are not included in this option, but a quad bike option is available in the booking panel.
