Full Description
Palm Jumeirah and Burj Al Arab
The tour begins in new Dubai with a drive along the trunk of Palm Jumeirah, the palm-shaped island built on reclaimed land, to the waterfront at its tip. From here you look across the water to the arched resort on the crescent and hear from your guide how the island was created from sand dredged from the seabed, and how tourism became the engine of the city's economy.
Next is a photo stop at Burj Al Arab, the 321-metre sail-shaped tower on its own island off the Jumeirah coast. On the way you also pass Dubai Marina with its forest of glass towers. Because this is a private Dubai city tour, you can ask the driver to linger where you want more photos.
Sheikh Zayed Road and the Museum of the Future
The drive along Sheikh Zayed Road, the main artery of modern Dubai, shows the skyline of the financial district and the towers of Downtown. Your guide stops at the Museum of the Future, opened in 2022: a silver torus-shaped building with windows formed by Arabic calligraphy, often described as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.
Entry tickets are not included, but the photo stop gives you time to admire the facade and the landscaped hill it stands on. If you want to go inside, book tickets separately for another time slot. Your guide also explains how Dubai plans its future around technology and innovation, and points out the twin towers and offices of the financial district across the road.
Dubai Frame and Zabeel Palace
The Dubai Frame in Zabeel Park is a 150-metre golden picture frame joined at the top by a glass-floored bridge. It stands symbolically between the two halves of the city, framing the old districts to the north and the modern skyline to the south, which makes it the natural turning point of an old and new Dubai tour.
Nearby, the tour continues through the Zabeel district past Zabeel Palace and the Zabeel Mosque, while your guide explains the history of the ruling family and how the United Arab Emirates is governed. These are outside views and photo stops; the Dubai Frame observation deck needs a separate ticket. If you book it for later the same day, ask your guide for the best time to go up for clear views.
Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, Al Fahidi Fort and Al Seef
Old Dubai comes alive in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, also known as Al Bastakiya, where restored coral-stone houses with wind towers line narrow shaded lanes. These wind towers were the natural air conditioning of the past, catching the breeze and pushing it down into the rooms below. The quarter now holds small galleries, cafes and cultural houses.
Close by stands Al Fahidi Fort, built around 1787 and considered the oldest existing building in Dubai, which you see from outside. The tour also passes Al Seef, the creekside promenade with heritage-style buildings. Walking here with a guide is the easiest way to understand how people lived before oil, when pearling, fishing and trade along the creek shaped daily life.
Textile souk, abra ride and the Gold and Spice Souks
From Bur Dubai you walk through Souq Al Kabeer, the old textile souk, with its wooden-roofed lanes full of fabrics, pashminas and souvenirs. Then comes a highlight of every Dubai old town tour: crossing Dubai Creek on an abra, the traditional wooden water taxi, with dhows moored along the banks. The ride is included.
On the Deira side, the guide takes you to the Gold Souk, where jewellery shops line the covered streets and gold is sold by weight at the day's price, and to the Spice Souk, full of saffron, frankincense, cardamom and dried limes. There is time for shopping before your driver takes you back to your hotel.
