Full Description

The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

The balloon takes off in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, a protected area of dunes and scrub in the emirate's interior, near Margham. The reserve protects native species and open desert away from city development, and it is the reason balloon flights here feel so quiet and untouched. A hot air balloon flight in Dubai starts before sunrise, when the desert is cool and the light is at its softest.

You are driven from Dubai to the launch site, roughly fifty minutes by 4x4 or SUV. Before the flight, a warm drink is served while the crew inflates the balloon and explains safety. This moment, with the balloon slowly filling and the sky turning pink, is already part of the magic.

The balloon flight at sunrise

The flight lasts between forty and seventy minutes depending on the weather and winds, and the balloon can climb to around 4,000 feet to give a wide view across the dunes toward the mountains. Below, the desert shows patterns of ripples and tracks, and with luck you may spot wildlife such as Arabian oryx or sand gazelle moving across the sand.

Balloon flights can only fly in calm conditions, and the pilot makes the final decision. If the weather is not suitable, the flight may be postponed or rescheduled. Wear layers, as it can be cool at take-off and warm by the time the sun is up, and bring a hat and sunglasses.

Bedouin camp breakfast and camel ride

After landing, guests continue to an authentic Bedouin-style camp for a buffet breakfast with hot and cold dishes, coffee and tea. The setting, with low seating, carpets and desert light, is a pleasant contrast to the excitement of the flight.

A camel ride across the sand follows, giving you a slow, close-up view of the dunes and the animals that have crossed them for centuries. Photographs with a falcon are another highlight, as falconry is a traditional Emirati sport. The activities are gentle and suit most guests, though children under five cannot join.

Pickup, timing and restrictions

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included from central Dubai hotels, except Jebel Ali and the Bab Al Shams area. You are collected very early, so plan for a short night. The whole experience lasts about five hours and you are returned to your hotel by mid-morning.

For safety, there are age, weight and health restrictions: adults must be aged twelve to eighty, children from five to eleven can fly with an adult, and passengers over 120 kg, pregnant women and people with back, heart or mobility conditions are not able to fly. A full flight video is available at an extra cost.
