Full Description
Burriana Beach, Nerja
Burriana is Nerja's longest and liveliest beach, a curve of dark sand and fine shingle just east of the town centre, lined with beach restaurants and a promenade. It faces south over the Mediterranean, with calm water on most summer days, which makes it the natural starting point for kayaking in Nerja. The kayak base is in white tents on the sand, between two beachfront restaurants.
Arrive about 20 minutes before your slot to complete the paperwork and the safety lesson, which covers getting in and out of the kayak, paddling technique, steering and what to do if you capsize. Parking at Burriana is free but fills quickly in summer, so allow extra time. Lockers for valuables can be rented on site.
The Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs and the Sea Lion Cave
Heading east from Burriana you enter the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, a protected natural area since 1989 where the mountains of the Sierra Almijara drop straight into the sea. The cliffs are cut by ravines, small caves and pebble coves, and below the surface meadows of Posidonia seagrass shelter fish, octopus and sea urchins, which is why the water here is so clear.
The first landmark is the Sea Lion Cave, a sea cave in the cliff face named after the monk seals that once lived along this coast. You can paddle close to the entrance for photos when the sea is calm. Just beyond, the Doncella waterfall trickles down the rock, a small taste of what is waiting further along the route.
Barranco de Maro and Caleta de Maro
Further along, the Barranco de Maro cove sits at the mouth of a steep ravine, a quiet strip of pebbles and sand backed by greenery. Then comes Caleta de Maro, a small sheltered cove below the village of Maro, popular with snorkellers because of its rocky seabed and calm water. Both are hard to reach from land, as the paths down are steep, so arriving by kayak feels like discovering a private beach.
On a self-guided route you decide how long to stay: pull the kayak onto the shore for a swim, float in the turquoise water or simply rest before the final stretch. Remember that the whole trip lasts about 2.5 hours, so keep an eye on the time so you can be back at Burriana when your slot ends.
The Maro Waterfall
The Cascada de Maro is the highlight of the route and the reason most people book a Maro waterfall kayak trip. Water from the irrigation channels of the Maro farmlands spills over the cliff and falls several metres straight into the sea, creating a curtain of water you can paddle right up to. Many paddlers steer under the spray for a refreshing shower and a memorable photo.
The waterfall can only be properly seen from the sea, which is why kayaking is the best way to get there. Its flow is usually stronger in spring and early summer. Is the Maro waterfall worth it? For a short, active adventure with real wow-factor and no crowds, it is one of the best things to do on this stretch of the Costa del Sol.
Nerja, Maro and the Best Time to Kayak
Nerja is a white-washed town on the eastern Costa del Sol, about an hour's drive from Málaga, famous for the Balcón de Europa viewpoint and the vast Nerja Caves with their prehistoric paintings. The small village of Maro, perched above the cliffs a few kilometres east, keeps an old sugar-mill heritage and views over the coast you paddle along.
The best time to kayak in Nerja is from May to October, when the sea is warm and usually calm. Morning slots tend to have the flattest water, while the afternoon wind can pick up. This self-guided route is made for travellers who prefer freedom and their own rhythm, and who are happy to read a simple map and follow the coastline.
