Full Description

Caleta de Vélez marina

Caleta de Vélez is the fishing port of Vélez-Málaga, a working harbour where trawlers still land fish each morning for the local market. Its marina, about 20 kilometres west of Nerja, is the departure point of this trip, and it is far easier to reach and park at than the busy centre of Nerja. The crew welcomes you on the pontoon, hands out life jackets and explains the route before the boat leaves at 10:00.

If you are wondering how to get to Caleta de Vélez, it lies just off the A-7 coastal motorway, about 35 minutes by car from Málaga and 25 minutes from Nerja, and local buses along the coast stop nearby. Arrive about 20 minutes early to find the boat and settle in. The harbour has cafés and small seafood restaurants if you want to eat before or after the trip.

The Axarquía coast and Nerja from the sea

Sailing east, the boat follows the coast of the Axarquía, the eastern corner of Málaga province, where the mountains rise steeply behind a string of beaches and small resorts. You pass Algarrobo Costa and Torrox Costa, with its lighthouse and long promenade, while the crew points out landmarks and the old coastal watchtowers along the shore.

Then Nerja comes into view, its white houses spread along the cliffs and the Balcony of Europe viewpoint jutting out over the sea. Seeing the town from the water is one of the best ways to understand its setting between the mountains and the Mediterranean. This Nerja boat trip gives you that view without the crowds, and it is a relaxed way to spend a morning on the Costa del Sol.

The Maro–Cerro Gordo cliffs and the Maro waterfall

Beyond Nerja the coastline becomes wild. The cliffs of Maro–Cerro Gordo are a protected natural site where the Sierra de Almijara drops into the sea, forming ochre rock walls, caves and hidden coves. The boat slows down to sail close to the shore, so you can see the seabed through the clear water and the watchtowers perched on the headlands.

The highlight is the Maro waterfall, fed by springs and old irrigation channels from the fields above, which falls in a thin white stream down a curtain of green plants into the sea. It is one of very few waterfalls in Europe that end directly in the sea, and it can only be seen properly from a boat. For many travellers this Maro waterfall boat trip is the most memorable view of the whole coast.

Swimming and paddleboarding below the cliffs

The boat anchors in a sheltered spot below the cliffs for a long stop. You can jump in and swim, float in the calm water or take one of the stand-up paddleboards to explore the rocks and coves at your own pace. The water here is among the cleanest on the Costa del Sol, thanks to the seagrass meadows protected by the natural site.

The crew is on hand to help beginners get onto the boards, and life jackets are available for everyone. There is time to dry off in the sun on deck before the return cruise to Caleta de Vélez. The best time for this trip is from June to September, when the sea is warmest; in spring and autumn the coast is quieter and still pleasant for a swim on sunny days.
