Full Description
From Nerja to the heart of Málaga province
Leaving Nerja in the early morning, the vehicle follows the coast west past Torrox and Torre del Mar, then turns inland through the rolling hills of the Málaga countryside, dotted with olive groves, almond trees and white villages. The journey to the northern entrance of the Caminito del Rey takes about two hours, depending on the pick-up points along the way.
Going on a Caminito del Rey day trip from Nerja is the easiest option for travellers staying on the eastern Costa del Sol, because the drive is long and the roads near the gorge are narrow and busy. Your guide shares information about the region on the way, so you arrive knowing what to look for on the walk.
The Caminito del Rey boardwalk
The original path was built at the start of the 20th century as a service walkway for the workers of the hydroelectric plants in the gorge. Clinging to the rock face, it became famous as one of the most daring paths in Europe, and after years of decay it was completely rebuilt and reopened in 2015 with a new wooden boardwalk fixed above the old concrete ledge, which still runs beneath your feet.
Today the walk is safe, well managed and suitable for anyone in reasonable health who is comfortable with heights. Helmets are compulsory and access is controlled, which keeps the boardwalk from becoming crowded. The full route is about 7.7 kilometres and runs in one direction from north to south, with the guided walk taking around three hours.
The Gaitanes Gorge and the hanging bridge
The Guadalhorce river has sliced through the limestone of the Sierra de Huma to create the Gaitanes Gorge, a canyon so narrow in places that the sunlight barely reaches the water. As you walk, you see towering vertical walls, rock layers twisted by ancient earth movements, and griffon vultures nesting in the cliffs above.
Near the end of the route comes the most famous moment: the hanging footbridge across the gorge, about 100 metres above the river. It moves very slightly in the wind but is perfectly safe. From the bridge you see the old railway line between Málaga and Córdoba, with its tunnels and bridges cut into the rock. Is the Caminito del Rey worth it? This view alone answers the question.
The Valle del Hoyo, the reservoirs and El Chorro
Between the two narrow gorges, the path crosses the Valle del Hoyo, an open valley of pines and Mediterranean scrub where the rock shows fossils of sea creatures, a reminder that this land was once under the sea. It is a peaceful break before the second, more dramatic gorge.
Above the gorge, near Ardales, lie the Guadalhorce reservoirs, whose bright turquoise water you can glimpse on the way in. The route ends near the village of El Chorro. The best time to visit the Caminito del Rey is spring or autumn; in summer, bring plenty of water and a hat. Note that the walkway is closed on Mondays, so plan your date around that.
