Overview
This Koh Samui cooking class is a small, hands-on half day with a Samui-born family of chefs. After hotel pickup in the Lamai, Maenam or Chaweng areas, you walk through the local fresh market in Bang Rak, near the Big Buddha, where your instructor explains the herbs, chillies and roots behind Southern Thai flavours. Back in the family's open-air kitchen you cook 4 dishes from a weekly menu, learn to press fresh coconut milk and pound curry paste by hand, then sit down to eat everything you made. It suits food lovers, couples and families with older children. Choose the morning class, which ends with lunch, or the small-group afternoon class.

Full Description
The local market in Bang Rak
The class starts at the fresh market in Bang Rak, on the north-east coast near the Big Buddha Temple, a working market where Samui families buy their vegetables, fish, coconuts and curry pastes. With your instructor you see the ingredients you will cook with: lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, Thai basil, bird's eye chillies, shallots and the many types of rice and noodles.
This part lasts about thirty minutes and is the best moment to ask questions about Thai flavours and how to replace ingredients after your trip. It is also a real glimpse of daily life on the island, away from the beach resorts. Bring a little cash if you want to buy snacks or fruit, and wear comfortable shoes, as the floor can be wet.
The family's open-air kitchen
After a short drive you arrive at the family's open-air kitchen, set in a tropical garden, where each guest has a cooking station with a wok, utensils and fresh ingredients. The instructors are native Samui chefs who teach in English, and the group stays small enough for everyone to get personal help at the wok.
The cooking lasts about two and a half hours. You learn by doing: grating and squeezing coconut to make fresh coconut milk, pounding curry paste in a stone mortar and balancing the four Thai tastes of sour, sweet, salty and spicy. While adults cook, younger children can wait in a dedicated play area, which makes this one of the easier Koh Samui activities for families.
Southern Thai dishes you cook
The menu changes every week and you choose 4 dishes from it, so check the current menu with us before booking if you have a favourite. Typical choices include a curry made from your own paste, a hot and sour soup, a stir-fry and a Thai salad or dessert, all in the Southern Thai style known for its bold herbs and rich coconut curries.
Every dish can be cooked spicy or mild, and the family adapts recipes for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and halal diets; tell us about allergies when booking so they can prepare alternatives. At the end you sit down together to eat what you cooked, with seasonal fruit and refreshments, and receive a recipe guide to recreate the dishes later.
Morning or afternoon class and the Big Buddha area
The morning class picks you up around 9:00 to 9:30 and ends with your dishes as lunch, while the afternoon small-group class starts with pickup around 13:15 to 14:15 and finishes with an early dinner. Both include the market walk and take about four hours from pickup to drop-off.
Bang Rak is also the area of the Big Buddha Temple, Wat Plai Laem and the airport, so the class fits well on a day when you stay on the north-east side of Koh Samui. Pickup is included from Lamai, Maenam and Chaweng; guests staying elsewhere on the island can be collected for an extra charge that we confirm before booking.
