Full Description
Grandfather and Grandmother rocks (Hin Ta and Hin Yai)
The tour starts with the Grandfather and Grandmother rocks, two natural rock formations on the coast whose unusual shapes have inspired local legends and made them a famous Samui landmark. The guide tells the story on the spot, with plenty of humour.
Nearby is a small market where you can browse handmade Thai crafts and snacks before heading into the mountains. It is a lively and fun start, and a good chance for photographs before the jeep ride begins. Allow a little time to walk along the shore and watch the waves break against the rocks.
Na Muang Waterfall and the mummified monk
Na Muang Waterfall is the island's largest and most beautiful cascade, with a pool where you can swim and cool off. It is one of the most popular stops on any Koh Samui jungle safari, and the guide gives you around an hour here to enjoy the water.
The tour also visits the temple of the mummified monk, a meditating monk whose body has been preserved and displayed, a sacred and unforgettable sight for many visitors. Respectful dress and quiet behaviour are expected at the temple. Bring a towel and a change of clothes, because you will want to stay in the water for a while.
The 4WD climb, Secret Buddha Garden and the mountain Buddha
After the waterfall the vehicle shifts into 4WD and climbs deep into the mountain jungle, past coconut farms and wild terrain. Lunch is a traditional Thai meal at a mountain-top restaurant with wide views over the island.
After lunch you wander through the Secret Buddha Garden, filled with hand-carved statues and jungle streams, then reach the large Buddha on the mountaintop, with views in almost every direction. The way down is on the other side of the mountain, and you return to your hotel in the late afternoon. Keep a hand on the grab handle and enjoy the bumps, as the jeep ride is part of the fun.
Timing, options and what to bring
The tour lasts about six to seven and a half hours, with return transfers from Maenam, Bophut, Choeng Mon, Chaweng and Lamai. The default option is a shared English-language group, and the other option adds an elephant watching stop where you help prepare healthy food for elephants.
Bring comfortable shoes, sunscreen and a camera, plus swimwear if you want to swim at the waterfall. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cool bottled water is included, and other drinks can be bought on the way. Start times depend on availability, so check the booking panel for the times you can select.
