Kemer Marina and the Taurus Coast
The dive boat leaves from the marina in Kemer, the resort town about 40 km southwest of Antalya where the Taurus Mountains drop straight into the sea. Pine forest reaches the shoreline, and the coast is broken into small coves, headlands and rocky points, which is exactly what makes the underwater scenery so varied.
From Antalya the drive takes around an hour along the coastal road, and on the standard option our driver handles it for you, both ways. If you are wondering how to get to Kemer marina on your own, choose the meet-at-the-marina option and drive or take a local bus there for 09:30. Kemer itself has a lively harbour promenade, worth a short stroll if you arrive early.
Your First Dive: Learning on the Reef
Before the first dive the instructor gives a full briefing on deck: breathing through the regulator, equalising your ears, hand signals and what to do if anything feels uncomfortable. You then put on the wetsuit, mask, fins and tank, practise in shallow water and descend slowly along a rope or the reef with the instructor holding you at all times.
Beginners stay at a shallow depth chosen by the instructor, typically for around 20 to 30 minutes underwater. Is scuba diving in Antalya worth it for a first-timer? The water here is famously clear, often with visibility of 20 metres or more in summer, so even a short try dive shows you a whole new world of rock, sand and light.
What You See Underwater
The reefs off Kemer are rocky rather than coral, with crevices, overhangs and small caves where marine life shelters. Look for groupers, bream, damselfish, wrasse, octopus hiding in holes, moray eels, sea stars and colourful sponges, with schools of small fish shimmering in the blue. On calm days the light reaches far down the rock walls.
The two dives are at different sites, so the second dive feels like a new adventure rather than a repeat. Certified divers can go a little deeper with the guide, while beginners stay near the instructor. The best time for scuba diving in Antalya is from May to October, when the sea is warm; August and September usually bring the warmest water.
Lunch on Board and the Second Dive
Between the dives the boat moves to the second site and lunch is served on board, giving your body a proper surface break. It is a good moment to sunbathe on deck, swim and snorkel near the boat, and talk with the instructor about the creatures you saw. Drinks are sold on board.
The second dive usually feels easier because you already know the equipment and the breathing rhythm. Afterwards the boat returns to Kemer marina in the afternoon and our driver takes you back to your hotel in Antalya. Souvenir photos and a DVD of your dives are often offered on the boat and can be bought separately if you would like a record of the day.
