Full Description
Tiananmen Square
Tiananmen Square is one of the largest city squares in the world, a vast paved space at the centre of Beijing. At its heart stands the granite Monument to the People's Heroes, with the Great Hall of the People on the west side, the National Museum of China on the east, and the old Qianmen gate towers to the south. The national flag is raised here at sunrise each day.
Entry to the square involves a security check and a passport-based reservation, so carry your passport. Your guide explains the history of the square from imperial times to today and the meaning of the buildings around it. Occasionally the square closes without notice for official events; then the guide shows you around its edges or replaces the visit with Jingshan Park.
Tiananmen Gate and the way into the palace
Tiananmen, the Gate of Heavenly Peace, was first built in 1417 as the main gate of the imperial city, the walled zone that surrounded the palace. Its red walls, five arched passages and double-eaved roof face the square across the marble Golden Water Bridges. Beyond it a long courtyard leads north, past Duanmen gate, to the Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City.
This approach shows the clever design of the imperial capital: every gate is larger and more formal than the last, building a sense of awe before you reach the palace itself. Your guide points out details such as the stone columns (huabiao) and the guardian lions, and the best photo spots before the crowds thicken.
The Forbidden City: the outer court
Built between 1406 and 1420, the Forbidden City was the palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties for almost five centuries, until 1912. Today it is the Palace Museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the largest surviving complex of ancient wooden buildings in the world. You enter through the Meridian Gate, the grandest of its four gates.
The outer court was the stage for state ceremonies. Across a huge courtyard rises the Hall of Supreme Harmony on its triple marble terrace, followed by the Hall of Central Harmony and the Hall of Preserving Harmony, behind which lies an enormous carved marble ramp of dragons and clouds. Your guide explains the symbolism of colours, numbers and the roof figures that protect each hall.
The inner court and the Imperial Garden
North of the ceremonial halls lies the inner court, where the imperial family lived and the empire was run day to day. The Palace of Heavenly Purity, the Hall of Union and the Palace of Earthly Tranquillity line the central axis, while side courtyards reveal smaller residences, halls of study and theatres. The tour covers the main axis and selected side palaces.
The visit ends in the Imperial Garden, a compact landscape of ancient cypresses, rockeries, pavilions and pebble mosaics, before you leave through the northern Gate of Divine Prowess. The clock and treasure exhibition halls inside the palace require extra tickets and are not part of this tour. Across the road, Jingshan Park's hill gives the classic view over the golden roofs if you have energy left.
Forbidden City opening hours and visiting tips
Forbidden City opening hours are roughly 08:30 to 17:00 from April to October and 08:30 to 16:30 from November to March, with last entry an hour before closing; the palace is closed on Mondays except on public holidays. Tickets are released seven days ahead, are linked to each visitor's passport and often sell out, which is why reserved entry on this tour is so valuable.
Is the Forbidden City worth visiting? It is the essential sight of Beijing, and a guide turns a maze of courtyards into a story. The best time to visit is a weekday morning in spring or autumn; summer is hot with little shade, and winter is cold but beautifully clear. Expect a lot of walking on stone paving, so comfortable shoes are a must.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
The default option is a small-group tour shared with other travellers. A private option is also available, with your own guide meeting you at your hotel within the 4th Ring Road and a wider choice of start times.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
On the group tour the route and timing are fixed. On the private option the guide adapts the pace, and you can stay longer in the sections you enjoy most.
How many people are in the group?
Groups are kept small so everyone can hear the guide. On the private option, only your own party joins.
Is the price per person or per group?
Prices are per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is hotel pickup included?
Not in the default option. One group option includes a one-way hotel pickup within the 3rd Ring Road, and the private option starts with your guide at your hotel within the 4th Ring Road.
What is included?
An English-speaking guide, reserved entry to the Forbidden City and a guided visit of Tiananmen Square, in a small group.
Is the ticket dated and do I need my passport?
Yes. Forbidden City tickets are dated, real-name tickets linked to your passport, released seven days in advance. Bring the same passport on the day; it is checked at security and at the palace gate.
How long is the tour?
About four hours. A shorter palace-only option takes about 2.5 hours, and options with the Temple of Heaven or the Summer Palace take about six hours.
Is it suitable for children or travellers with reduced mobility?
Children from three years are welcome, but expect several kilometres on foot over stone paving and thresholds. The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users.
What should I bring?
Your passport, comfortable shoes, water, sun protection in summer and warm layers in winter. Leave large bags at the hotel.
What is the best time to go?
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the most pleasant. The early departure is cooler and quieter; remember the palace is closed on Mondays.
