Zhangjiajie

Plan Zhangjiajie with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.

Step out onto a viewpoint at Yuanjiajie as the morning mist begins to lift and the forest below seems to float: hundreds of sandstone pillars rise straight from the valley floor, their tops crowned with twisted pines, their sides streaked with moss and ferns. Clouds drift between them, revealing one tower and hiding the next, and the only sounds are birds, wind in the trees and a distant stream far below.

Zhangjiajie at first sight

Zhangjiajie lies in the north-west of Hunan province in central China, in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site of more than three thousand quartz-sandstone columns, deep gorges, caves and forests. Nearby, Tianmen Mountain rises above the city with its natural arch in the cliffs, reached by one of the longest cable cars in the world, and Tujia and Bai communities give the region its own culture.

Why include Zhangjiajie in your itinerary?

  • The floating-mountain pillars. In Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, towering sandstone columns rise above the clouds at Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, one of the most extraordinary landscapes on earth.
  • Heaven's Gate on Tianmen Mountain. A cable car climbs from the city centre to the summit, where cliffside glass walkways and a great natural arch high in the rock await.
  • Glass bridges and green lakes. The Grand Canyon glass bridge spans a deep gorge, while Baofeng Lake and Golden Whip Stream offer quiet water and forest scenery.

Signature experiences in Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

The heart of Wulingyuan, the National Forest Park, is a vast area of pillars, ravines and forest linked by eco-buses, cable cars and paths. Yuanjiajie offers the most famous views of the floating-mountain pillars, while Tianzi Mountain looks over a sea of peaks. In the valley, Golden Whip Stream follows a flat path beside clear water and cliffs. Park tickets are valid for several days, so plan at least two.

The Bailong Elevator

Built into the side of a cliff, the Bailong Elevator carries visitors more than three hundred metres up from the valley to the Yuanjiajie plateau in under two minutes, with glass cabins looking out over the pillars. It is the quickest way between the Golden Whip Stream area and the high viewpoints, though queues can be long on holidays and it may close in storms.

Tianmen Mountain and Heaven's Gate

From a station in the centre of Zhangjiajie city, a cable car climbs more than seven kilometres over villages and cliffs to the top of Tianmen Mountain. Up there, cliffside paths with glass sections circle the summit among pines and temples. Buses descend a winding road of tight bends to Heaven's Gate, a huge natural arch reached by a long stairway or by escalators inside the mountain.

The Grand Canyon Glass Bridge

About forty minutes from Wulingyuan, the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is crossed by a glass-floored bridge suspended high above the gorge, with dizzying views straight down. After crossing, paths lead into the canyon past waterfalls and cliffs, and a boat ride on the lake completes the visit. Bring flat shoes, as shoe covers are required on the glass, and check opening days in bad weather.

Baofeng Lake and Huanglong Cave

Close to Wulingyuan, Baofeng Lake is an emerald lake set among sheer peaks, explored by boat with a short climb from the waterfall at the entrance. Nearby, Huanglong Cave is one of the largest caves in China, with vast halls of stalactites, an underground river crossed by boat and coloured lighting. Both make a gentle half-day after the big viewpoints of the forest park.

Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Zhangjiajie

Wulingyuan Town

Wulingyuan is the small town at the main entrance to the National Forest Park, about forty-five minutes from the airport. Hotels of every level line its streets and the river, close to the park gates, Baofeng Lake and Huanglong Cave. It is the most practical base for the pillars, letting you enter early and return to rest in the middle of the day.

Zhangjiajie City

Zhangjiajie city, about forty kilometres south of Wulingyuan, has the Tianmen Mountain cable car station, the high-speed railway station and the airport. Its central streets have modern hotels, shops and restaurants, with views of Tianmen Mountain from many rooms. It suits the first or last night of a trip, or a day dedicated to Tianmen.

Inside the Forest Park

A few small hotels and guesthouses sit on the plateaus inside the park, near Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain. Staying here means sunrise views over the pillars before the crowds arrive and quiet evenings in the forest. Facilities are simple and luggage must be carried, so we suggest packing a small overnight bag and leaving the rest at your hotel in town.

Zhangjiajie Forest Park Gate

The south-western entrance of the park, near the old Zhangjiajie village, is the starting point for Golden Whip Stream and the Huangshi village viewpoint. A small cluster of hotels and guesthouses sits by the gate, ideal for those who want to start at the bottom of the valley and finish on the plateaus by elevator or cable car.

How long to stay in Zhangjiajie and how to pair it

Recommended stay

We recommend three nights in Zhangjiajie. Spend two days in the National Forest Park, one for Yuanjiajie and the Bailong Elevator and one for Tianzi Mountain and Golden Whip Stream, and a third for Tianmen Mountain and Heaven's Gate. Add a fourth night for the Grand Canyon glass bridge, Baofeng Lake and Huanglong Cave at a gentle pace.

How to pair it

Zhangjiajie pairs naturally with Chongqing, Chengdu and Changsha, linked by flights and high-speed trains, and with the big cities by direct flights. A seven-day trip combines Shanghai and Zhangjiajie. In ten days, add Xi'an or Guilin. A fourteen-day journey can link Beijing, Xi'an, Zhangjiajie, Guilin and Shanghai, using short flights between regions.

Best time to visit Zhangjiajie and the rhythm of the day

Best months

The best months for Zhangjiajie are April to May and September to November, with mild temperatures and fresh or golden forests. Mist is common at any time of year and views can change by the hour, which is part of the magic. June to August is hot, rainy and crowded. Winter is cold, sometimes with snow and ice that close paths or the Tianmen road, but the frosted peaks are beautiful.

The daily rhythm

Days in Zhangjiajie start early, as the first hours in the park are the quietest and often the clearest. Plan the high viewpoints for the morning and the valleys and lakes for the afternoon. Eco-buses stop running in the late afternoon, so return to the gates on time. Evenings in Wulingyuan are quiet, with dinner and an early night.

On-the-ground logistics in Zhangjiajie

Arrival

Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG) is about five kilometres from Zhangjiajie city and about forty-five minutes by car from Wulingyuan, with flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and other cities, plus some international routes. Zhangjiajie West station has high-speed trains to Changsha and other cities. We issue tickets and arrange private transfers to your hotel in Wulingyuan or the city.

Getting around

Inside the National Forest Park, eco-buses link the gates, viewpoints, the Bailong Elevator and cable cars, and your multi-day ticket covers them. Between Wulingyuan, the city, Tianmen Mountain and the Grand Canyon, a private car with driver arranged by our team is the most comfortable choice, saving long waits for public buses. A guide helps you plan the routes and avoid the crowds.

Local etiquette tip

Zhangjiajie is friendly and used to visitors. Stay on marked paths and behind railings at viewpoints, and never feed the wild monkeys, which can grab food and bags. Keep the park clean and carry your rubbish out. In Tujia villages, ask before photographing people. Tipping is not expected in China, though guides and drivers appreciate it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask most about Zhangjiajie.

Where should first-time visitors stay in Zhangjiajie?

First-time visitors usually stay in Wulingyuan, beside the main gate of the National Forest Park, close to Baofeng Lake and Huanglong Cave. Spend a night in Zhangjiajie city as well if you plan Tianmen Mountain, as its cable car starts in the city centre. Our team can suggest hotels in both and arrange your private transfers from the airport or the station.

Can Zhangjiajie be done as a day trip from Changsha, or does it need an overnight stay?

A day trip from Changsha is not practical, as travel takes about three hours each way and the park is huge. Zhangjiajie needs at least two nights, and ideally three, to see the pillars, Tianmen Mountain and the glass bridge without rushing. We arrange flights, train tickets, private transfers and two-day tours of Zhangjiajie.

What is the dress code and etiquette in Zhangjiajie?

Wear comfortable outdoor clothes in layers and shoes with a good grip, as paths have many steps and can be wet. Modest dress is appreciated in temples on Tianmen Mountain. Stay behind railings, keep the park clean and never feed the monkeys. Our guides explain local customs and help you plan the best routes for each day.

Is Zhangjiajie tourist friendly, and is halal food available?

Yes. Zhangjiajie welcomes many international visitors, with signs in English at main sights. Halal food is more limited than in big cities, but noodle houses run by Hui Muslim families, marked qingzhen, are found in Zhangjiajie city and Wulingyuan, serving beef noodles and simple halal dishes. Rice, eggs, vegetables and fish are easy to find elsewhere.

Is it safe to travel to Zhangjiajie now?

Zhangjiajie is generally very safe, with well-maintained paths, railings and park staff. The main care points are slippery steps in rain or ice, steep drops at viewpoints, wild monkeys and holiday crowds. Follow your guide's advice and keep plans flexible in bad weather. Before departure, check your own government's official travel advice and keep our WhatsApp line handy on roaming data.

What are the must-do things in Zhangjiajie?

The must-do things in Zhangjiajie include the floating-mountain pillars at Yuanjiajie, the Bailong Elevator, Tianzi Mountain, Golden Whip Stream, Tianmen Mountain with its cable car and Heaven's Gate, the Grand Canyon glass bridge, Baofeng Lake and Huanglong Cave. Our private tours by vehicle combine these at a comfortable pace.

How many days do you need in Zhangjiajie?

Three days is ideal for Zhangjiajie: two in the National Forest Park, for Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and Golden Whip Stream, and one for Tianmen Mountain. Two days cover the highlights at a quicker rhythm, while four days add the Grand Canyon glass bridge, Baofeng Lake and Huanglong Cave.

Our private transfer meets you at arrivals with a name board, tracks your flight and takes you door to door at a fixed price for the whole vehicle; the transfer pages list every route.

Is there public transport from the airport to Zhangjiajie?

Flights link Zhangjiajie with Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and other cities, and Zhangjiajie West station has high-speed trains to Changsha and other cities. Inside the forest park, eco-buses, cable cars and the Bailong Elevator connect the viewpoints, but between the airport, the city, Wulingyuan and the canyon a private car is the most practical option. With luggage, a family or a late flight, the private car is the simpler choice.

Among them: Private Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Day Tour, Private Zhangjiajie Express Day Trip with Tianmen & Glass Bridge, Private Furong Waterfall & Fenghuang Night Tour from Zhangjiajie, Zhangjiajie 2-Day Mini-Group Tour with Glass Bridge & Tianmen and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Mini-Group Day Tour.
