Full Description

Tianmen Mountain, Zhangjiajie

Tianmen Mountain is a sheer-sided massif that rises to about 1,518 metres right on the edge of Zhangjiajie city, a separate attraction from the Forest Park in Wulingyuan. It is famous for Tianmen Cave, a huge natural arch through the ridge, for its cliff-hanging walkways and for Heaven-Linking Avenue, a road of 99 hairpin bends climbing the slope. A Buddhist temple stands in the forest near the summit.

How do you get to Tianmen Mountain? From Zhangjiajie city centre, go to the Tianmen Mountain cable car lower station and take the free shuttle bus to the mountain gate, or take a taxi straight to the mountain gate. Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG) and the railway stations are only a short drive away, so the visit fits easily into an arrival or departure day.

The express cableway and how this ticket works

This ticket uses the round-trip express cableway: a shuttle bus takes you to the mountain gate, then a cable car ride of about seven minutes lifts you to Tianmen Cave Square, and you come back down the same way. During 2026 the long cable car from the city centre has been undergoing an upgrade, with its upper section closed, so this express route is the main way up.

Is it worth getting this ticket rather than a tour? If you are comfortable using shuttle buses and following signs, yes: it lets you spend as long as you like at each viewpoint within your visit. What are the Tianmen Mountain opening hours? The mountain opens early in the morning and the last entry is in the mid-afternoon, varying with the season, so choose a morning time slot if you can.

Tianmen Cave, Heaven's Gate

From Tianmen Cave Square you look up at Heaven's Gate, an opening about 131 metres high and 57 metres wide that passes right through the mountain. Clouds often drift through it, and on clear days the sky frames the opening perfectly. A stairway of 999 steps climbs to the arch; there is also an auxiliary escalator alongside the stairs, paid separately on site, for those who prefer not to climb.

Once at the arch, the escalators built inside the mountain take you between Tianmen Cave and the summit, and these are included in your ticket. Allow about an hour for the square, the arch and the photos. The best time to visit Tianmen Cave is the morning, before tour groups fill the stairway.

Summit walkways and glass skywalk

At the summit, plank paths run along both the east and west sides of the mountain, bolted to the cliff edge with drops of hundreds of metres below. Some sections have glass floors; shoe covers for these sections can be bought on site if you wish to walk them, and the glass parts are optional. Viewing platforms look over the city, the bends of the mountain road and the surrounding ridges.

Spend around two hours walking the loops at a relaxed pace, with rest stops and snacks along the way. Is Tianmen Mountain worth visiting? For many travellers it is the highlight of Zhangjiajie, with drama of a completely different kind from the sandstone pillars. Head back to the express cableway in good time so that you are down before the evening shuttle schedule ends.
