Chongqing

Chongqing

Plan Chongqing with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.

Stand on the riverbank at nightfall and Chongqing lights up like no other city: the stilted wooden terraces of Hongyadong glow gold against the cliff, towers blaze with colour on both sides of the Jialing and Yangtze rivers, and bridges strung with lights cross the dark water. A cable car glides overhead, sightseeing boats drift past, and from the hills above, the whole city seems to climb in layers up the mountains.

Chongqing at first sight

Chongqing, in south-west China, is a vast mountain city built where the Jialing River meets the Yangtze. Its steep streets, stairways and bridges stack the city in dramatic layers, so that a road may run over a rooftop and a train through a building. It is the gateway to the Three Gorges, the Wulong karst landscapes and the Dazu rock carvings, and it is famous across China for its fiery hot pot.

Why include Chongqing in your itinerary?

  • A city in layers. Hongyadong's stilted buildings, the Liziba monorail passing through a residential block and walkways high above the streets make Chongqing feel like a city from the future.
  • Night views and river cruises. Cruises on the Two Rivers at night, the Yangtze cable car and hilltop viewpoints show one of the most spectacular skylines in Asia.
  • Natural wonders nearby. Wulong's Three Natural Bridges, its deep gorges and the UNESCO-listed Dazu rock carvings are within easy reach by car.

Signature experiences in Chongqing

Hongyadong and the Two Rivers Night Cruise

Hongyadong is a complex of traditional stilted buildings stacked along a cliff above the Jialing River, filled with shops, restaurants and terraces, and lit in gold every evening. Nearby, at Chaotianmen, sightseeing boats leave for night cruises on the Two Rivers, sailing past the illuminated skyline, Hongyadong and the great bridges where the Jialing meets the Yangtze. Cruises last about an hour.

Liziba Monorail and the Yangtze Cable Car

Chongqing's Line 2 monorail passes straight through a residential building at Liziba station, and a viewing platform below lets you watch the trains glide in and out. In the city centre, the Yangtze River cable car carries passengers across the river between Yuzhong and the southern bank in a few minutes, with fine views of the city's layers. Queues can be long in the evening and on holidays.

Raffles City and the City Skyline

At the tip of the Yuzhong peninsula, Raffles City's towers are linked high in the air by a long horizontal skybridge with a glass-floored observation deck overlooking the confluence of the two rivers. In the evening, the hills of Nanshan on the southern bank offer the best panoramic viewpoints over the illuminated city, reached in about thirty minutes by car.

Wulong Karst and the Three Natural Bridges

About three hours east of Chongqing, Wulong is a UNESCO-listed karst landscape. Its Three Natural Bridges are huge stone arches spanning a deep gorge, reached by a glass elevator descending into the valley, with paths below passing waterfalls and an old courier station. Nearby, Longshui Gorge is a narrow, fissured canyon with walkways and waterfalls. It makes a long but rewarding day trip.

The Dazu Rock Carvings

About an hour and a half west of Chongqing, the Dazu rock carvings are a UNESCO World Heritage site of thousands of Buddhist and Taoist figures carved into cliffsides more than eight centuries ago. At Baodingshan, painted scenes of daily life and a great reclining Buddha line a horseshoe-shaped valley. A thousand-armed figure, restored in gold, is a highlight. A guide brings the stories to life.

Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Chongqing

Jiefangbei and Yuzhong

The Yuzhong peninsula, between the two rivers, is the heart of Chongqing, with Jiefangbei square, pedestrian shopping streets, Hongyadong, Raffles City and the cable car all close together. Hotels of every level, many with river views, make it the most practical base for first-time visitors, though streets are steep and busy until late.

Hongyadong and Chaotianmen

On the northern edge of Yuzhong, the area around Hongyadong and Chaotianmen looks over the confluence of the Jialing and Yangtze rivers. River-view hotels here offer spectacular night scenes, and the cruise piers are a short walk away. It suits travellers who want to step straight out into Chongqing's most famous evening views.

Jiangbei and Guanyinqiao

Across the Jialing River, the Jiangbei district around Guanyinqiao is a modern area of shopping malls, large hotels and wide streets, closer to the airport. The riverfront offers views back across to Hongyadong and Yuzhong. It suits travellers who prefer a calmer, more modern base with easy metro access to the old centre.

Nan'an and Nanshan

On the southern bank of the Yangtze, the Nan'an district and the Nanshan hills offer riverside promenades, hotels facing the illuminated skyline and green hillsides with night viewpoints. Staying here gives you the classic view of the Yuzhong peninsula from across the water, a short drive or cable car ride from the centre.

How long to stay in Chongqing and how to pair it

Recommended stay

We recommend three nights in Chongqing. Spend one day in Yuzhong, with Jiefangbei, Raffles City, the Yangtze cable car and Hongyadong, finishing with a Two Rivers night cruise. Spend one day at Liziba, Ciqikou ancient town and the Nanshan viewpoints, and one on a day trip to the Wulong karst or the Dazu rock carvings.

How to pair it

Chongqing pairs naturally with Chengdu, about an hour to an hour and a half away by high-speed train, and with Zhangjiajie by short flight. A seven-day trip combines Chengdu and Chongqing. In ten days, add Xi'an. A fourteen-day journey can link Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing and Zhangjiajie or Guilin, with fast trains and short flights.

Best time to visit Chongqing and the rhythm of the day

Best months

The best months for Chongqing are March to May and September to November, with mild temperatures and clearer skies. Summer, from June to August, is very hot and humid, often near forty degrees, and Chongqing is known as one of China's furnace cities. Winter is cool, grey and often foggy, which softens the views but rarely brings frost. Avoid national holidays if possible.

The daily rhythm

Chongqing is a late city. Mornings are slow, with a bowl of spicy noodles and a quiet start. Afternoons suit the monorail, the cable car and the old town of Ciqikou, while the city truly comes alive after dark, when the skyline lights up, Hongyadong glows and the river cruises sail, with streets busy until well past midnight.

On-the-ground logistics in Chongqing

Arrival

Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) lies about twenty kilometres north of the centre, forty minutes to an hour by car, with flights from across China and from several Asian cities. High-speed trains link Chongqing with Chengdu in about an hour to an hour and a half, and with Guiyang, Xi'an and other cities. We issue flight and train tickets and arrange private transfers to your hotel.

Getting around

Chongqing's metro and monorail lines cover the centre, the airport and the main stations, and taxis and ride-hailing apps are easy to find. The city is very hilly, with many stairs, tunnels and multi-level streets that can confuse maps, so allow extra time. For Wulong, Dazu and the hilltop viewpoints, a private car with driver arranged by our team is the most comfortable choice.

Local etiquette tip

Chongqing people are warm, direct and proud of their city. Dress modestly in temples and at the Dazu carvings, and ask before photographing people. In busy places like Hongyadong, be patient with crowds and keep to the flow on stairs. When ordering, ask for mild spice if you prefer. Tipping is not expected in China, though guides and drivers appreciate it.

Good to know

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask most about Chongqing.

Where should first-time visitors stay in Chongqing?

First-time visitors usually stay in Yuzhong, near Jiefangbei or Hongyadong, close to Raffles City, the cable car, the river cruise piers and metro lines, ideally in a room with a river view. Jiangbei offers modern hotels closer to the airport, and Nan'an has classic skyline views. Our team can suggest a hotel in any area and arrange your private transfer from the airport.

Can Chongqing be done as a day trip from Chengdu, or does it need an overnight stay?

A day trip from Chengdu is possible by high-speed train, about an hour to an hour and a half each way, but Chongqing is best at night, so we recommend at least one night to see Hongyadong lit up and take a Two Rivers cruise. Two or three nights allow Wulong or Dazu. We arrange train tickets, private transfers and day trips from Chengdu.

What is the dress code and etiquette in Chongqing?

Light, casual clothing is fine in summer, with comfortable shoes for the many stairs and slopes; bring layers for cool, foggy winters. Cover shoulders and knees in temples and at the Dazu carvings. Ask before photographing people, and be patient in crowds. Our guides explain local customs and help you find your way through the city's many levels.

Is Chongqing tourist friendly, and is halal food available?

Yes. Chongqing welcomes visitors from across China and the world, though English is less common than in Shanghai, so a guide helps. Halal food is available: restaurants run by Hui Muslim families, marked qingzhen, serve beef noodles and lamb dishes, some offer halal hot pot, and the city has mosques serving its Muslim community. Ask for mild spice.

Is it safe to travel to Chongqing now?

Chongqing is generally very safe, with low crime and lively streets until late. Take care on steep stairs and slopes, especially in rain, and watch your belongings in crowds at Hongyadong and on holidays. Summer heat is the main weather challenge. Before departure, check your own government's official travel advice and keep our WhatsApp line handy on roaming data.

What are the must-do things in Chongqing?

The must-do things in Chongqing include Hongyadong at night, a Two Rivers night cruise, the Liziba monorail, the Yangtze River cable car, Raffles City's skybridge, the Nanshan viewpoints, Ciqikou ancient town, the Three Natural Bridges in Wulong and the Dazu rock carvings. Our private tours by vehicle combine these at a comfortable pace.

How many days do you need in Chongqing?

Three days is ideal for Chongqing: one for Yuzhong, Hongyadong and the night cruise, one for Liziba, Ciqikou and Nanshan, and one for Wulong or Dazu. Two days cover the city highlights at a quicker rhythm, while four days allow both Wulong and Dazu.

What can I book in Chongqing with Haqqi Tours?

Day tours, attraction tickets, private airport transfers, flight tickets and train tickets, including Chongqing City Full-Day Tour with Monorail & Night View, Private Wulong Karst All-Inclusive Day Tour from Chongqing and Private Chongqing City Day Tour by Car with Meals. Each has its own page, and the WhatsApp desk combines any of them into one plan with one written price.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel in Chongqing?

Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) lies in Yubei district about 25 km north-east of Jiefangbei, 40 minutes to an hour by car depending on traffic; Hongyadong is about 25 km away, Guanyinqiao about 18 km and Nan'an about 30 km. Our private transfer meets you at arrivals with a name board, tracks your flight and takes you door to door at a fixed price for the whole vehicle; the transfer pages list every route.

Is there public transport from the airport to Chongqing?

High-speed trains link Chongqing with Chengdu in about an hour to an hour and a half and with Xi'an, Guiyang and other cities, and flights connect the airport with all of China. The metro and monorail cover the centre, but the hilly, multi-level streets make a private car the easiest way to reach hotels, viewpoints, Wulong and Dazu. With luggage, a family or a late flight, the private car is the simpler choice.

Which tours are available in Chongqing?

Among them: Chongqing City Full-Day Tour with Monorail & Night View, Private Wulong Karst All-Inclusive Day Tour from Chongqing, Private Chongqing City Day Tour by Car with Meals and Wulong Three Natural Bridges & Longshui Gorge Day Trip Chongqing. Each page says whether the day is private or small-group, what it includes and how long it lasts.

Are the tours private or in a group?

Both exist, and each tour page says which. A private tour has a vehicle and guide for your party alone; the desk can make most group tours private on request.

How do I book?

Fill in the form on any page or message us on WhatsApp with the date, the number of travellers and the hotel. A member of our team confirms the price and the details in writing within minutes.

Are the prices fixed?

Yes - every price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before you travel and does not change on the day.

Do the drivers and guides speak Arabic or English?

It depends on the city and the day, so we do not promise a particular language; tell us your preference and we do our best. The WhatsApp desk always works in Arabic and English.

Can I change or cancel a booking in Chongqing?

Yes, in the same WhatsApp conversation. The terms depend on the product and on how close to the date the change comes; the desk states them before you pay.
