Full Description
Wulong Karst: a World Heritage landscape near Chongqing
Wulong lies in the southeast of Chongqing Municipality, where the Wu River and its side streams have cut deep into thick layers of limestone. In 2007 the Wulong Karst was inscribed by UNESCO as part of the South China Karst World Heritage Site, recognised for its giant collapse sinkholes (tiankeng), natural bridges and fissure gorges. These are not mountains you look up at but chasms you descend into, with sheer walls, hanging ferns, moss and waterfalls.
How to get to Wulong from Chongqing? The area is roughly three hours by road from the city centre, mostly on the expressway and then through the Wu River valley. Public buses exist, but a Wulong day trip from Chongqing by private vehicle is by far the easiest way to see both sites in one day and be back at your hotel by evening, without changing buses or waiting for park shuttles.
Three Natural Bridges (Tiankeng Three Bridges)
The Three Natural Bridges are the star of Wulong: three colossal limestone arches, known as the Sky Dragon, Green Dragon and Black Dragon bridges, linking the rims of two deep sinkholes. Each bridge stands more than two hundred metres above the valley floor, making this one of the largest natural bridge groups in the world. Below them, streams, waterfalls and thick vegetation fill the bottom of the gorge.
Your ticket includes the sightseeing lift that carries you down the cliff to the valley floor, so there is no steep descent on foot. From there a paved loop path passes beneath all three arches, past waterfalls and a reconstructed old courtyard post station, with stairs in places. Allow about two hours. We arrive around 10:30, and our driver waits at the exit so you do not need the park shuttle at the end.
Longshuixia Fissure Gorge
Longshuixia, the Dragon Water Gorge, is a slot canyon so narrow in places that the sky becomes a thin ribbon overhead. A lift and stairway bring you down into the fissure, then walkways and plank paths fixed to the rock follow the stream past a chain of waterfalls, green pools and rock bridges, before you climb out at the far end.
The visit takes about one and a half to two hours, and for many guests it is the most dramatic part of the day, especially after rain when the falls are full. Paths are damp and there are many steps, so good shoes matter. Your guide sets an easy rhythm, explains how water dissolved the limestone over the ages, and finds quiet photo spots away from the larger groups.
Local lunch and the Wu River valley
Between the two sites we stop at a hand-picked family-run restaurant for a family-style countryside lunch of local dishes, typically fresh mountain vegetables, tofu, rice and home-style stir-fries. Chongqing cooking is famous for chilli and Sichuan pepper, so tell your guide if you prefer milder food. If you eat halal, please tell us when booking so we can tell you honestly what is possible on this route.
After Longshuixia, the return drive follows the Wu River valley, where limestone cliffs drop straight into jade-green water and small villages cling to the slopes. It is a relaxing end to a full day, with photo stops whenever you ask, before we drop you back at your hotel in central Chongqing at around 18:00.
Is Wulong worth visiting? Season and practical tips
Is Wulong worth visiting on a short Chongqing stay? If you want one day of nature away from the city, yes: the scale of the bridges and gorges is unlike anything else near Chongqing, and seeing both sites in one day is easy with your own vehicle. Expect a long day of about ten hours, with roughly six hours of driving in total, broken by the sites and lunch.
The best time to visit Wulong is spring (April to May) and autumn (September to November), when the air is clear and temperatures are pleasant. Summer is lush but hot and busy, and winter is quiet and cool. Both sites open daily from morning to late afternoon, and tickets are issued against your passport details, so bring the original passport you used to book.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is fully private: the vehicle, the driver and the guide are only for your party, and you never join other travellers. There is also a private option with a driver and a digital guidebook instead of a live guide.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
Yes. You can spend longer at the Three Natural Bridges, shorten lunch or add photo stops on the drive. Both sites stay in the plan because the tickets are reserved in advance with your passport details.
How many people can join, and how many fit in the vehicle?
Only your own party joins. We match the size of the air-conditioned vehicle to your group, so please tell us the exact number of travellers, including children, when you book.
Is the price per person or per group?
Prices for this tour are per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your date and group size.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes. We pick you up from your hotel lobby in central Chongqing at about 07:30 and drop you back there at around 18:00.
What is included?
Your private English-speaking guide, a private air-conditioned vehicle with driver, hotel pickup and drop-off, entry to the Three Natural Bridges with the sightseeing lift, entry to Longshuixia Fissure Gorge, a family-style local lunch and bottled water.
How long is the tour?
About ten hours, including roughly three hours of driving each way, about two hours at the Three Natural Bridges, lunch and up to two hours in Longshuixia Gorge.
Is it suitable for children or travellers with reduced mobility?
Children who can manage stairs enjoy it a lot, and the lifts remove the steepest climbs. It is not suitable for wheelchair users, as both sites have many steps and uneven, wet paths.
What should I bring?
Your original passport, comfortable shoes with grip, a light rain jacket, sun protection, a layer for the cooler gorges and some cash. Water is provided.
When is the best time to visit Wulong?
Spring and autumn give the clearest, most comfortable days. Summer is lush but hot and busy, and the waterfalls are fullest after rain. Our early start gets you to the bridges before the midday crowds.
Is the lunch halal?
The included lunch is local countryside cooking and is not certified halal. If you eat halal, tell us when booking and we will tell you honestly what can be arranged; Chongqing city itself has halal (qingzhen) restaurants run by Hui Muslim families.
