Full Description

An immersive rotating-stage show in Chongqing

Unlike a classic theatre where you look at a stage from the front, this immersive show in Chongqing places the audience in the middle of a circular set. Ring-shaped stages turn slowly around and with the seating, so one scene fades behind you while the next appears in front. Some seat categories are fixed, while the rotating sections, including our default distinguished guest seats, move with the stage rings for a changing point of view.

Large panoramic screens, naked-eye 3D projections and directional sound fill the space: you hear street vendors from one side, footsteps on stone from another and the sound of waves as the river scenes begin. The actors perform very close to the audience, so you see every expression. It is a modern take on stage drama, and one of the most original things to do in Chongqing at night.

The story: Chongqing in the late 1940s

The drama is set in Chongqing at a turning point in the late 1940s, when the city was the scene of war, hardship and deep political change. It follows a family whose brothers choose different paths, ordinary people trying to survive, and prisoners who keep their hope alive behind iron bars. The scenes recreate places every Chongqing local knows: stilted wooden houses climbing the cliffs, the busy lanes of an old river port and the docks of the Jialing River.

Highlights include a moving prison scene in which a child gazes at the stars through a barred window, and the finale in which a huge ship hull slowly rises from the side of the stage as blue light and the sound of waves fill the hall. The performance is in Mandarin; an English translation headset can be borrowed at the venue against a refundable deposit.

Show times, seats and how to get there

There are two performances a day, at 16:00 and 19:30, each lasting about 75 minutes. Your ticket is dated and timed: you choose the date, the show time and the seat category when you book. Besides our default distinguished guest seats on the rotating ring, the booking panel also offers regular, guest, honoured guest (rotating), supreme guest and VIP seats, which differ in position and comfort.

The theatre is in central Chongqing, and we send you the exact address together with your entry code after booking. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to get there; the city's steep, multi-level streets make walking routes confusing even with a map. Plan to arrive 30 minutes before the show to collect a headset and find your seats calmly.

Chongqing by night: before and after the show

The early show at 16:00 leaves your evening free for the city's famous night views. Hongyadong, the cliffside complex of stilted buildings lit in gold, is spectacular from about 19:00, and a Two Rivers night cruise from the nearby piers shows the skyline where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet. The late show at 19:30 fits perfectly after a day of sightseeing.

For dinner, Chongqing is the home of spicy hotpot, and you can always ask for a mild or clear broth. Halal food is easy to find: the city has halal (qingzhen) restaurants and noodle shops run by Hui Muslim families, including halal hotpot. Haqqi Tours can also arrange a private transfer to and from the theatre if you prefer not to navigate the hilly streets at night.
