Full Description

Liziba monorail station and the Yangtze River cable car

The day begins with Chongqing's most famous photo: at Liziba station on Line 2, the monorail runs straight through a residential tower, with the platform built inside the building. From the viewing deck across the road you watch trains slide in and out of the façade, and your guide also takes you inside the station. Allow 30 to 60 minutes here; it is the best introduction to how the city adapts to its hills.

Next comes the Yangtze River cable car, opened in the 1980s as everyday transport between the Yuzhong peninsula and the south bank. The cabin glides high above the brown water of the Yangtze for a few minutes, with views of bridges, river boats and towers on both banks. The ride is included, and the private car waits on the other side, so there is no backtracking.

People's Great Hall and the Three Gorges Museum

The People's Great Hall, completed in the 1950s, is one of the most striking buildings in Chongqing: a vast hall topped with a round blue-tiled roof inspired by the imperial temples of Beijing, flanked by red columns and wings with green roofs. It still hosts concerts and official meetings, and your guide explains its architecture from the great square in front of it, a highlight of any private Chongqing tour.

Across the square, the Three Gorges Museum tells the story of the region, from ancient Ba culture and bronze treasures to the river life of the Three Gorges and the building of the great dam that reshaped them. You spend about 30 to 45 minutes on the most important galleries. Note that the museum usually closes on Mondays; on that day your guide adjusts the plan.

Jiefangbei, Kuixinglou and the 3D city

In the city centre you visit Kuixinglou Square, which looks like an ordinary street at ground level but is actually built on the 22nd floor of a tower, with roads and buildings stacked below. It is a perfect example of why Chongqing is called the 3D city. A short walk leads to Jiefangbei, the central pedestrian district around the Liberation Monument, where you stop for an included lunch and time to explore.

Nearby, the Chongqing Art Gallery shows changing exhibitions of local and Chinese art for a short cultural break. Later you ride one of Asia's longest escalators, a steep tunnel of moving steps that links upper and lower parts of the city in a couple of minutes and is still used by commuters every day. The private car makes these jumps between levels effortless.

Hong'en Temple Park and the skyline viewpoints

For the classic panorama, your guide takes you up to Hong'en Temple Park, a wooded hill on the north bank with a tall pavilion overlooking the peninsula where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet. From the top you see bridges, skyscrapers and green hills spreading in every direction. Plan 30 to 60 minutes, including the walk through the trees, which is pleasant even on hot days.

Another city-balcony viewpoint follows, where terraces open onto the skyline and the rivers. If you are wondering what to see in Chongqing in one day, these viewpoints explain the city better than any map: towns built on cliffs, streets on several levels and bridges everywhere. On a clear evening the lights start to appear while you are still up on the hills.

Longmenhao Old Street and Luohan Temple

On the south bank of the Yangtze, Longmenhao Old Street preserves stone houses, old warehouses and buildings from the time when Chongqing opened as a trading port at the end of the 19th century. Its name comes from rocks in the river shaped like a dragon gate. You stroll the restored lanes for about 30 to 45 minutes, with river views and small shops.

Back in the old centre, Luohan Temple is a Buddhist temple founded about a thousand years ago and now surrounded by tall buildings, a peaceful contrast to the busy streets. Its most famous hall holds hundreds of life-size painted arhat statues, each with a different expression. Please dress modestly and speak softly inside; the visit takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

Chongqing hotpot dinner by the river

The day ends with dinner at a riverside park, where you enjoy the view of the water and the city lights. The highlight is Chongqing hotpot: a bubbling pot of spicy broth with chillies and Sichuan peppercorns in which you cook thin slices of meat, vegetables, tofu and mushrooms at the table. You can ask for a split pot with a mild or clear broth on one side.

Please tell us about dietary needs when booking. Chongqing has halal (qingzhen) restaurants run by Hui Muslim families, including halal hotpot, and vegetarian options are easy to arrange. After dinner your guide drops you at your hotel, a railway station or the airport, completing a full ten-hour Chongqing day tour by car.
