Shenzhen

Shenzhen

Plan Shenzhen with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.

Stand on the waterfront at Shenzhen Bay as evening falls and the city shows its modern face: glass towers rising one behind another, their facades turning into giant screens of moving light, a long bridge stretching across the bay towards Hong Kong and joggers passing under rows of palms. Electric buses and taxis glide almost silently along wide avenues, drones hum over the park, and the whole skyline seems to pulse in time with the music of the evening light show.

Shenzhen at first sight

Shenzhen, in Guangdong province, lies just across the border from Hong Kong on the Pearl River Delta. A small market town only a few decades ago, it has grown into one of China's largest and youngest cities and a global centre of electronics, robotics and drones. Beyond the towers, it has green parks, beaches, theme parks, an old walled town and an art village famous for its painters.

Why include Shenzhen in your itinerary?

  • The future, today. Shenzhen is the place to see China's technology up close, from huge electronics markets and robotics showrooms to drone light shows and an all-electric fleet of buses and taxis.
  • Easy from Hong Kong. High-speed trains reach Shenzhen from Hong Kong in about fifteen to twenty minutes, making it an easy add-on to a Hong Kong stay, with your passport for the border.
  • Parks, culture and family fun. Window of the World, the OCT district, Dafen Oil Painting Village, Xin'an ancient town and the beaches of Dameisha offer variety for every traveller.

Signature experiences in Shenzhen

Technology Tour of Shenzhen

Shenzhen's rise as a tech city is best seen in person. Our guided technology tours visit Huaqiangbei, a district of vast electronics markets where every component imaginable is sold, as well as robotics and drone showrooms and innovation centres where new products are demonstrated. Your guide explains how the city became the world's hardware workshop, and you can watch robots, smart devices and drones in action.

Window of the World and the OCT District

In the Overseas Chinese Town district, Window of the World is a large park of detailed miniature replicas of famous landmarks from every continent, with an observation tower and evening performances. Nearby, the OCT area has creative parks, galleries and cafés in former factories, set among tree-lined streets. It is a good choice for families and a relaxed day out.

Dafen Oil Painting Village

In the north of Shenzhen, Dafen is a village of narrow lanes lined with hundreds of small studios where painters create and copy oil paintings by hand, from classic European art to modern pieces. You can watch artists at work, browse galleries and order a portrait or a custom painting. It is a colourful, unusual place that shows another side of the city's creativity.

Xin'an Ancient Town and Shekou

In the Nanshan district, Xin'an ancient town, also known as Nantou old town, preserves stone gates, old houses and temples from the centuries when the area was a walled county seat, now filled with small shops and cafés. Nearby, Shekou offers a waterfront promenade, Sea World plaza and the ferry port for boats to Hong Kong airport and Macau.

Double-Decker Bus and the Skyline

Open-top double-decker sightseeing buses run through Futian and Nanshan, passing the Civic Centre, Shenzhen Bay and the main parks, a comfortable way to get your bearings. In the evening, Futian's skyline stages a synchronised light show across dozens of towers, best seen from the Civic Centre square or Shenzhen Bay Park. The tallest tower's high observation deck offers views as far as Hong Kong on clear days.

Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Shenzhen

Futian

Futian is Shenzhen's central business district, with the Civic Centre, wide parks, luxury hotels and the Futian high-speed station for trains to Hong Kong. It is the most practical base for first-time visitors, close to shopping malls, the evening light show and metro lines to every part of the city. Shenzhen's mosque and many halal restaurants are also in this district.

Nanshan and Shenzhen Bay

West of Futian, Nanshan holds the technology parks, Shenzhen Bay Park, the OCT district, Window of the World and Xin'an ancient town. Modern hotels with bay views make it a pleasant base for families and business travellers. The waterfront parks are perfect for evening strolls, and Shekou's ferry port is close by.

Luohu

Luohu, in the east of the centre, is Shenzhen's older commercial heart, next to the Luohu border crossing with Hong Kong. It has busy markets, large shopping centres and many mid-range hotels, and is convenient for travellers crossing the border on foot. It is lively and practical, though less polished than Futian.

Yantian and Dameisha

In the far east of Shenzhen, Yantian and Dameisha offer sandy beaches, green hills, seaside hotels and the coastal boardwalk, along with OCT East's theme parks in the hills. It is about forty-five minutes to an hour from Futian by car. It suits travellers who want a relaxed seaside stay away from the busy centre.

How long to stay in Shenzhen and how to pair it

Recommended stay

We recommend two or three nights in Shenzhen. Spend one day on a technology tour of Huaqiangbei and innovation showrooms, followed by the skyline light show in Futian. Spend one day at Window of the World, the OCT district and Shenzhen Bay Park, and one at Dafen Oil Painting Village and Xin'an ancient town, or relaxing on the beaches of Dameisha.

How to pair it

Shenzhen pairs naturally with Hong Kong, about fifteen to twenty minutes away by high-speed train, and with Guangzhou, about thirty to forty-five minutes by train. A seven-day trip combines Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. In ten days, add Guilin. A fourteen-day journey can link Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guilin, Shanghai and Beijing, with fast trains and short flights.

Best time to visit Shenzhen and the rhythm of the day

Best months

The best months for Shenzhen are October to December, with sunny, dry weather and comfortable temperatures. Spring, from March to April, is mild but humid and sometimes foggy. Summer, from May to September, is hot and humid with heavy rain, and typhoons can bring storms between July and September. Winter is short and mild, though January can feel cool on cloudy days.

The daily rhythm

Days in Shenzhen move at a modern pace. Mornings suit technology tours and markets, which open from mid-morning. Afternoons are for theme parks, museums or the beach, and late afternoons for the bay parks as the heat fades. Evenings bring the skyline light show, waterfront dinners and busy shopping streets, with the city open until late.

On-the-ground logistics in Shenzhen

Arrival

Shenzhen Airport (SZX) lies about thirty-five kilometres north-west of Futian, around forty-five minutes by car, with flights from across China and from several Asian cities. Many travellers arrive from Hong Kong by high-speed train to Futian or Shenzhen North in about fifteen to twenty minutes, or cross on foot at Luohu. Bring your passport and check the visa rules for your nationality. We issue tickets and arrange private transfers.

Getting around

Shenzhen has one of China's most modern metro networks, linking the airport, the border crossings, the stations and every major district, and electric taxis and ride-hailing apps are everywhere. Distances are large, so plan your days by area. For technology tours, Dafen, Dameisha and cross-border transfers with Hong Kong, a private car with driver arranged by our team is the most comfortable choice.

Local etiquette tip

Shenzhen is young, fast and international, and casual dress is fine almost everywhere. In technology showrooms and factories, follow the rules on photography. At markets, bargaining is normal for electronics, done politely. Dress modestly at the mosque and in temples. Keep your passport with you for the border and hotel check-in. Tipping is not expected in China, though guides and drivers appreciate it.

First-time visitors usually stay in Futian, close to the Civic Centre, shopping malls, the evening light show, the mosque and Futian station for trains to Hong Kong. Nanshan, near Shenzhen Bay, the OCT district and Window of the World, is ideal for families. Our team can suggest a hotel in any area and arrange your private transfer from the airport or the border.

Can Shenzhen be done as a day trip from Hong Kong, or does it need an overnight stay?

Yes, Shenzhen is an easy day trip from Hong Kong, as high-speed trains take about fifteen to twenty minutes, and a private tour can cover a technology district, Window of the World or Dafen in one day. To enjoy the evening light show and more of the city, we recommend one or two nights. Remember your passport and check visa rules before you go.

What is the dress code and etiquette in Shenzhen?

Casual, comfortable clothing is fine everywhere in Shenzhen, with light fabrics for the hot, humid months. Cover shoulders and knees at the mosque and in temples. Follow photography rules in showrooms and factories, bargain politely at electronics markets and keep your passport with you. Our guides explain local customs and help you plan the best route.

Is Shenzhen tourist friendly, and is halal food available?

Yes. Shenzhen is one of China's most international cities, with signs in English and many visitors from abroad. Halal food is easy to find: restaurants run by Hui Muslim families, marked qingzhen, serve beef noodles and lamb dishes across the city, and there are Middle Eastern and South Asian halal restaurants too. Shenzhen's mosque in Futian holds daily prayers.

Is it safe to travel to Shenzhen now?

Shenzhen is generally very safe, with low crime, modern infrastructure and a strong police presence. Watch your belongings in crowded markets and at border crossings, and use official taxis or ride-hailing apps. Typhoons in late summer are the main weather concern. Before departure, check your own government's official travel advice and keep our WhatsApp line handy on roaming data.

What are the must-do things in Shenzhen?

The must-do things in Shenzhen include a technology tour, the electronics markets of Huaqiangbei, the Futian skyline light show, Window of the World, the OCT district, Dafen Oil Painting Village, Xin'an ancient town, a double-decker sightseeing bus, Shenzhen Bay Park and the beach at Dameisha. Our private tours by vehicle combine these at a comfortable pace.

How many days do you need in Shenzhen?

Two to three days is ideal for Shenzhen: one for technology and the Futian skyline, one for Window of the World, the OCT district and Shenzhen Bay, and a third for Dafen, Xin'an ancient town or the beach. One day from Hong Kong covers the highlights at a quicker rhythm, while four days allow time for Guangzhou as well.

Is there public transport from the airport to Shenzhen?

High-speed trains link Futian and Shenzhen North with Hong Kong West Kowloon in about fifteen to twenty minutes and with Guangzhou in about thirty to forty-five minutes, and the Luohu crossing can be passed on foot. How do I book?

Fill in the form on any page or message us on WhatsApp with the date, the number of travellers and the hotel. A member of our team confirms the price and the details in writing within minutes.

Are the prices fixed?
