Suzhou
Plan Suzhou with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.
Step through a round moon gate into one of Suzhou's classical gardens and the noise of the city disappears: a still pond reflects curved rooftops and white walls, twisted rocks rise like miniature mountains, and covered walkways zigzag between pavilions, bamboo and flowering trees. Every window frames a new picture, a carp breaks the surface of the water, and somewhere behind a wall a stringed instrument plays softly.

Suzhou, in Jiangsu province, lies just west of Shanghai, about half an hour away by high-speed train. Crossed by canals and stone bridges since ancient times, it was a city of scholars, silk and gardens for many centuries, and its classical gardens are listed by UNESCO as masterpieces of Chinese garden design. Around it, old water towns such as Zhouzhuang and Tongli keep the quiet charm of the Jiangnan region.
Why include Suzhou in your itinerary?
- The classical gardens. The Humble Administrator's Garden, the Lingering Garden and the Master of the Nets Garden are UNESCO-listed masterpieces of rocks, water, pavilions and plants.
- Canals and old streets. Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street follow canals lined with whitewashed houses, stone bridges and traditional shops, best seen from a small wooden boat.
- Water towns and silk. Zhouzhuang and Tongli are among the most charming water towns in China, and Suzhou's long silk and embroidery tradition is still alive in its workshops.
Signature experiences in Suzhou
The Humble Administrator's Garden
The largest of Suzhou's classical gardens, the Humble Administrator's Garden is a landscape of ponds, islands, bridges and pavilions spread over about five hectares, laid out more than five centuries ago. Lotus flowers fill the water in summer, and each hall is placed to frame a view of rocks, trees and reflections. Go at opening time, as it becomes very busy by mid-morning, and combine it with the Suzhou Museum next door.
The Lingering Garden and the Master of the Nets Garden
The Lingering Garden is famous for its long covered corridors with carved windows and for a towering limestone rock from Lake Tai at its heart. The Master of the Nets Garden is small and exquisite, built around a single pond with perfectly balanced proportions. In season, evening visits to the Master of the Nets Garden include traditional music in lantern-lit halls.
Tiger Hill
In the north-west of the city, Tiger Hill is a wooded hill crowned by an old brick pagoda that has leaned gently for centuries. Paths climb past a sword-testing rock, a stone terrace, ponds and small temples, with bonsai gardens at its foot. It is a peaceful place for a morning visit, often combined with a boat ride along the Shantang Street canal nearby.
Canal Boats, Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street
Pingjiang Road, in the east of the old city, follows a canal lined with whitewashed houses, stone bridges, tea rooms and craft shops, and is quietest in the morning. Shantang Street, leading towards Tiger Hill, glows with red lanterns at night. Small wooden boats rowed by local boatmen glide along both canals, and larger boats circle the old city moat.
Zhouzhuang and Tongli Water Towns
About an hour south-east of Suzhou, Zhouzhuang is one of the best-known water towns in China, with arched stone bridges, canals and old merchant houses. Closer to the city, Tongli is quieter, with three small bridges and a beautiful garden of its own. Both are best explored by rowing boat along the canals, and they make an easy half-day trip from Suzhou or a day trip from Shanghai.
Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Suzhou
The Old City
Inside the ring of canals, the old city holds the classical gardens, Pingjiang Road, Guanqian Street and the Suzhou Museum. Boutique hotels in restored courtyard houses and modern hotels are within easy reach of the main sights. It is the most atmospheric base for first-time visitors, with canals and lantern-lit lanes for evening strolls.
Pingjiang Road
The area around Pingjiang Road, in the east of the old city, is one of the best-preserved canal quarters in Suzhou, with small courtyard hotels, teahouses and shops along the water. It is close to the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Lion Grove Garden. It suits travellers who want quiet, character and canal views.
Jinji Lake
East of the old city, the Suzhou Industrial Park is a modern district around Jinji Lake, with large hotels, wide promenades, shopping malls and a giant observation wheel. Lakeside views and evening light shows make it pleasant, and the metro links it to the old city in about twenty minutes. It suits families and business travellers.
Near Suzhou Railway Station
The area around Suzhou Railway Station, just north of the old city, is practical for short stays and early trains to Shanghai, Hangzhou or Nanjing. Hotels here are convenient, and the Humble Administrator's Garden is only a short drive away. It suits travellers visiting Suzhou for one night or arriving late by train.
How long to stay in Suzhou and how to pair it
Recommended stay
We recommend two nights in Suzhou. Spend one day in the classical gardens, starting with the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Suzhou Museum, then the Lingering Garden and Tiger Hill, and the evening on Shantang Street. On the second day, ride a canal boat along Pingjiang Road and visit the water towns of Tongli or Zhouzhuang.
How to pair it
Suzhou pairs naturally with Shanghai, about thirty minutes away by high-speed train, and with Hangzhou, about an hour and a half by train. A seven-day trip combines Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou. In ten days, add Beijing. A fourteen-day journey can link Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou or Guilin, with fast trains and short flights.
Best time to visit Suzhou and the rhythm of the day
Best months
The best months for Suzhou are April to May, when the gardens are in bloom, and September to November, with clear skies and autumn colours. June brings the plum rains, and July and August are hot and humid, though lotus flowers fill the ponds. Winter is cold and damp but quiet, and gardens are beautiful with winter plum blossom.
The daily rhythm
Days in Suzhou start early at the gardens, which are calmest at opening time. Late mornings suit museums and canal boats, and long lunches in a teahouse. Afternoons are good for Tiger Hill or a water town, and evenings for lantern-lit Shantang Street, Pingjiang Road or a garden visit with traditional music in season.
On-the-ground logistics in Suzhou
Arrival
Suzhou has no airport. Most visitors fly into Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA), about an hour and a quarter by car, or Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), about two hours by car. High-speed trains from Shanghai reach Suzhou in about thirty minutes, and from Hangzhou in about an hour and a half. We issue train tickets and arrange private transfers from Shanghai or the station to your hotel.
Getting around
Suzhou has an easy metro network linking the railway stations, the old city and Jinji Lake, and taxis and ride-hailing apps are easy to find. The old city is compact, and canal boats connect several sights. For Tiger Hill, the gardens on a tight schedule and the water towns, a private car with driver arranged by our team is the most comfortable way to see more in less time.
Local etiquette tip
Suzhou is gentle and courteous. In the gardens, stay on paths, do not climb on rocks or pick flowers, and keep voices low in quiet halls. Dress modestly in temples. Garden paths are narrow, so be patient in crowds and let others pass on bridges. Tipping is not expected in China, though guides, boatmen and drivers appreciate it.

Can Suzhou be done as a day trip from Shanghai, or does it need an overnight stay?
Yes, Suzhou is an easy day trip from Shanghai, as high-speed trains take about thirty minutes, and a private day tour can cover the Humble Administrator's Garden, a canal boat and Pingjiang Road. Casual, modest clothing and comfortable shoes are ideal, as garden paths include steps and uneven stones. Cover shoulders and knees in temples. Is Suzhou tourist friendly, and is halal food available?
Yes. Suzhou is welcoming and well organised, with signs in English at the main sights. Halal food is available: restaurants run by Hui Muslim families, marked qingzhen, serve beef noodles and lamb dishes in the old city and new districts, and Suzhou has a historic mosque. Fish from the lakes, vegetables and rice dishes are also easy to find.
