Full Description
A classical garden in Suzhou
Suzhou's classical gardens, listed together by UNESCO, are among the finest landscape art in China, and this private Suzhou tour begins with one of them, usually the Master of the Nets Garden. It is one of the smallest, but many consider it the most perfect: a compact family residence of halls and courtyards opening onto a central pond, where every window, rock and tree frames a carefully composed picture.
Its origins go back to the twelfth century, and the present layout dates from the eighteenth century. Your guide explains how a garden like this recreates mountains and lakes within a few walls, and how light, water and architecture work together. About an hour is enough to see it calmly. Arriving in the morning, by private vehicle, helps you enjoy it before the busiest hours.
Suzhou's old city wall and the Grand Canal
Suzhou was founded around two and a half thousand years ago as the capital of an ancient kingdom, and sections of its old city wall and gates still stand beside the moat. From here you look over the Grand Canal, the immense waterway that has linked the north and south of China for well over a millennium and is today a World Heritage Site.
Your guide takes you along the wall and the canal bank, where barges still pass and old stone bridges cross the water, and tells the story of a city built on trade in rice, silk and salt. It is a short stop, about 30 to 45 minutes, but it gives a strong sense of Suzhou's age and of why the city earned its reputation as a city of canals.
A Suzhou silk mill and lunch
Silk made Suzhou rich, and the city's silk tradition is centuries old. At a silk mill you see the whole process: silkworms feeding on mulberry leaves, cocoons softened in hot water, fine threads drawn and twisted onto reels, and the stretching of silk layers by hand to make quilts. It is a fascinating stop for children and adults alike, and there is a shop if you want to buy silk.
Next comes a local Chinese lunch, which is included. Please tell us your dietary needs when you book, and we pass them on so that your guide can arrange a suitable meal; Suzhou has halal (qingzhen) restaurants run by Hui families, so a halal lunch can be requested. After lunch, the drive to Zhouzhuang takes about one hour.
Zhouzhuang water town by boat
Zhouzhuang, in Kunshan between Suzhou and Shanghai, is one of the best-known water towns of the Yangtze delta, a village built on a network of canals and recorded since the eleventh century. Most of its houses date from the Ming and Qing dynasties, with whitewashed walls, black-tiled roofs and steps leading down to the water where residents once loaded boats.
The highlight is your boat ride: a wooden boat rowed by hand glides under arched stone bridges, including the famous Twin Bridges, one round and one square, past tea houses and old merchant homes. Then you have time to explore the lanes on foot. Is Zhouzhuang worth visiting? Its canals and bridges are a picture of old China, best enjoyed in the quieter late afternoon.
Practical tips: getting there and the best time to go
How to get to Suzhou and Zhouzhuang from Shanghai? By road, in your private vehicle: Suzhou is about one and a half to two hours from central Shanghai depending on traffic, Zhouzhuang about one hour from Suzhou, and the return from Zhouzhuang to Shanghai about one and a half hours. You simply relax while your driver handles the motorways.
The best time to visit Suzhou and Zhouzhuang is spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, when it is mild and the gardens look their best. Summer is hot and humid with frequent showers, and winter is cold and damp but quiet. Weekends and Chinese public holidays bring large crowds, especially in the water towns.
