Full Description
Beijing West Railway Station and the Early Start
The day starts before sunrise. Our driver meets you in your hotel lobby in central Beijing and drives you to Beijing West Railway Station, one of the city's largest rail hubs, where high-speed trains leave for Xi'an and the southwest. Passengers pass a passport check and security screening before reaching the waiting halls, and the driver walks you through these steps to your boarding gate.
Arriving early matters, as gates close a few minutes before departure and the station is huge. Having someone with you who reads the Chinese signs removes the stress of the first hour. A Terracotta Army day trip from Beijing is a long day, so we recommend a light breakfast to carry with you and comfortable clothes for travelling.
The High-Speed Train from Beijing to Xi'an
China's high-speed network makes this trip possible. The line runs for more than 1,000 kilometres across the North China Plain, through Hebei and Henan provinces, past cities such as Shijiazhuang and Zhengzhou, then west along the Yellow River valley via Luoyang into Shaanxi. The fastest services take about 4.5 hours, cruising at around 300 kilometres per hour.
Second-class seats are comfortable, with legroom, power sockets and hot water on board; first-class seats are wider, arranged two by two, and available as an upgrade option. Train tickets are issued against your passport, which is why we ask for a passport photo when you book. Your seat is reserved for both directions, so you can rest, read or watch the countryside roll past.
Xi'an North Railway Station and Lunch
Xi'an North Railway Station is the city's main high-speed hub, north of the centre. Your private guide and driver wait at the arrivals exit with a sign bearing your name, and your private air-conditioned vehicle is ready for the drive east to Lintong, about an hour away. The station is linked to the city by metro, but with your own driver there are no transfers to work out and no luggage to carry around.
Lunch is flexible and at your own expense, before or after the museum. Your guide can suggest Shaanxi specialities such as biangbiang noodles or roujiamo flatbread sandwiches. Xi'an has a long Hui Muslim heritage, and halal (qingzhen) noodle shops run by Hui families are easy to find; tell your guide if you eat only halal food and they will choose accordingly.
The Terracotta Army
Then comes the reason for the journey: the army of life-size clay soldiers made more than 2,200 years ago to guard the First Emperor's tomb, discovered by farmers in 1974 and listed by UNESCO in 1987. With your private guide you spend about three hours here, starting with the long infantry ranks of Pit 1, then the archers, cavalry and display cases of Pit 2, and the command post of Pit 3.
The exhibition halls complete the visit with the painted bronze chariots and newly restored finds. Is the Terracotta Army worth a day trip from Beijing? For travellers who will not otherwise reach Xi'an, it is the best way to see one of the world's great archaeological sites, and the private guide makes every minute count.
Return to Beijing and Planning Tips
After the museum your Xi'an driver takes you back to Xi'an North for the evening train. You arrive at Beijing West at around 22:30 to 23:00, where your Beijing driver meets you and drives you to your hotel. The whole day lasts about 17 hours, so plan a lighter programme for the following morning.
The best time for this trip is spring or autumn, when trains are less crowded than in the summer holidays; avoid the first week of October and Chinese New Year, when tickets sell out. If you already have train tickets, or you are staying in Xi'an, the option without train tickets covers the transfers, guide and museum ticket. Book early so we can secure good train times.

How many people fit in the vehicle?
We match the private vehicles in both cities to your party size. Tell us how many are travelling when you book.
Is the price per person or per group?
Prices are per person, with lower rates for children, because each traveller needs a train seat and a museum ticket. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
