Full Description
The Ancient City Wall of Xi'an
The wall you walk today was built between 1370 and 1378, early in the Ming dynasty, on the foundations of the inner imperial city of the Tang capital, Chang'an. It forms a long rectangle about 13.7 kilometres around, rises roughly 12 metres, and is so thick that its top, 12 to 14 metres wide, could carry soldiers and horses side by side. Bastions project from the wall at regular intervals so defenders could shoot along its face, and a broad moat, now lined with gardens, still circles the outside.
Restored carefully since the 1980s, it is the most complete large city wall surviving in China and one of the landmarks that make a Xi'an trip unforgettable. Is the Xi'an City Wall worth visiting? Yes: it gives you history, fresh air and the best free-roaming views of the city in a single visit, and it is right in the centre, a short ride from almost every hotel.
South Gate (Yongning Gate)
Yongning Gate, the South Gate, is the most famous and most decorated of the wall's gates. Like the other main gates it is a fortress in its own right: an outer arrow tower with rows of firing windows, an enclosed barbican courtyard where attackers could be trapped, and an inner gate tower with sweeping tiled roofs. A drawbridge crosses the moat on its southern side, and the area is still used for formal welcome ceremonies for official guests.
This option enters from the north side of the South Gate, facing the old city and South Street, which leads straight up to the Bell Tower about one kilometre away. The South Gate keeps the longest hours, so it is the best gate for sunset and the illuminated evening, when lanterns and floodlights outline every roof and battlement. Other options in the booking panel let you start at the south side of Yongning Gate, at Wenchang Gate or at the East Gate.
Walking the Ramparts
Once on top, the wall becomes a wide stone promenade. Watchtowers and corner towers break the line at intervals, red lanterns hang along the parapet, and on one side you look over the moat park and the modern city, on the other over courtyard houses, temple roofs and busy lanes inside the walls. Information boards explain the defences, and small exhibitions sit inside some of the towers.
Walking the whole circuit takes about three and a half to four hours, but most visitors walk a section of one to two hours and leave at the next gate. From the South Gate a good choice is to head west towards the quieter stretch near the Muslim Quarter, or east towards Wenchang Gate. Electric carts run on the wall for those who prefer to ride; they are paid on site and not part of this ticket.
Opening Hours and Best Time to Visit
Xi'an City Wall opening hours at the South Gate run from about 08:00 to 22:00, and you can choose a preferred entry time in the booking panel. Other gates close earlier, which is one more reason to start at Yongning Gate if you want the evening. Your paper ticket allows re-entry on the same day, so you can come in the morning, rest, and return for sunset.
The best time to visit the Xi'an City Wall is late afternoon into dusk, when the brick glows amber and the gate towers light up. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; summer middays are hot with little shade on the wall, and winter evenings are cold but clear. During the Spring Festival period the wall hosts a famous lantern display, beautiful but crowded.
How to Get to the City Wall and What Is Nearby
How to get to the Xi'an City Wall South Gate: take Metro Line 2 to Yongningmen station, which exits right beside the gate, or ask a taxi for Yongning Gate. From the Bell Tower it is about a fifteen-minute walk straight down South Street.
The wall sits at the heart of Xi'an's old city, so it combines easily with other sights. The Bell and Drum Towers, the Muslim Quarter with its lively halal food lanes and the historic Great Mosque of Xi'an are all inside the walls to the north-west of the South Gate. Near Wenchang Gate lies the Forest of Stone Steles museum and its old calligraphy street. Ask us about private transfers or a guided day that links these places.
