Full Description

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Founded in 1987 on a green hillside about ten kilometres north of central Chengdu, the base began as a rescue centre for wild giant pandas and grew into the best-known panda breeding and research centre in the world. Its work on breeding and cub care has helped the giant panda move from endangered to vulnerable on the global list, and many pandas born here now live in zoos and reserves across China and abroad.

The site has been expanded several times and now covers a large area of forest, bamboo and lakes, with modern open-air enclosures alongside the original panda houses. Is Chengdu Panda Base worth visiting? For nature lovers and families it is the highlight of Sichuan, and a ticket with timed entry is the simplest way to see it without joining a group.

Enclosures, nursery houses and red pandas

Adult giant pandas spend much of the day eating bamboo, and early morning feeding is when they are most active, sitting upright, climbing and sometimes rolling down the slopes of their enclosures. Younger pandas share larger spaces where they wrestle and play. From autumn into winter the nursery houses show the youngest cubs, born in late summer, sleeping in baskets or taking their first wobbly steps.

Do not miss the red panda areas. These small, russet animals with ringed tails move along branches and walkways inside open woodland and often pass close to visitors. Between the enclosures there are lakes with black swans, bamboo tunnels, cafés, rest areas and toilets, so you can easily spend three to four hours on the site.

South Gate or West Gate, and the sightseeing shuttle

The base has more than one entrance. The West Gate stands higher up the hill, so walking from West to South is mostly downhill and usually less crowded, which suits families with children and older travellers. The South Gate is the classic entrance, closest to the original nursery houses and some of the most popular panda villas.

The site is large and hilly, and shuttle stops are on the main roads rather than at the enclosures, so expect to walk between viewing areas even if you ride. The default option covers entry only; another option in the booking panel adds the internal sightseeing shuttle, and a shuttle-only ticket exists for travellers who already hold entry. A Chengdu panda base tour with a private guide is also available on our Chengdu page if you prefer company.

How to get there, opening hours and best time to visit

How to get to Chengdu Panda Base: take metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue station and a short bus or taxi ride to the gate, or a taxi from the centre in about thirty to forty minutes. Chengdu Panda Base opening hours are 7:30 to 18:00 from 1 May to 31 October, with last entry at 17:00, and 8:00 to 17:30 from 1 November to 30 April, with last entry at 16:30.

The best time to visit Chengdu Panda Base is in the first hours after opening, when the pandas feed and the paths are quieter. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; in July and August the pandas move into air-conditioned rooms as the day heats up. On Mondays some indoor areas, including the museums and a popular panda villa, close for maintenance, while the rest of the base stays open.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a ticket or a guided tour?

It is an entry ticket only. You explore on your own with a digital guide. If you want a guide, see our private guided panda base tour on the Chengdu page.

Is the ticket dated or timed? Do I need my passport?

Yes. The ticket is for a set date and entry time slot, and it is linked to your passport. Bring the original passport: it is scanned at the gate.

How long should I spend inside?

Most visitors spend three to four hours. The site is large, so arriving early gives the best panda viewing.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person, with a lower child rate. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

What is included?

Entry to the open areas and pavilions of the base, passport registration for direct entry and a digital guide. The internal shuttle, a guide and transport are not included in the default option.

Is transport or hotel pickup included?

No. Take metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue station and a short ride to the gate, or a taxi of about thirty to forty minutes from the centre.

Which entrance should I use?

The West Gate is higher and usually quieter, so you walk mostly downhill. The South Gate is the classic entrance near the original nursery houses.

Arrive at opening time, when pandas are fed and most active. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer afternoons are hot and pandas often stay indoors.
