Full Description

Dujiangyan Panda Valley

Panda Valley lies in a forested side valley in the foothills of the mountains above Dujiangyan, a historic town about sixty kilometres north-west of Chengdu. It was created as part of the Chengdu panda conservation network, with a focus on research into wild behaviour and the training of pandas before they are released into protected forests. The enclosures are larger and greener than in the city, laid out across slopes of bamboo, trees and streams.

Is Dujiangyan Panda Valley worth visiting? If you want to see pandas in surroundings that feel close to their natural home, and with far fewer people around you than at the famous base in Chengdu, it is an excellent choice, especially as part of a day in the Dujiangyan area.

What you see inside

The visit follows trails that wind up and down the valley past the panda enclosures. Pandas here have space to climb high into trees, wander through bamboo and rest in shady hollows, so you often watch them behaving as they would in the wild. Information boards and small exhibition halls explain panda diet, behaviour, breeding and the work of preparing young pandas for life outside.

Red pandas live in wooded areas along the route and are usually easier to spot moving about. The scenery changes through the year: blossom and fresh green in spring, deep shade in summer, warm colours in autumn and occasional mist in winter. Allow about two to three hours to see everything without hurrying, and wear shoes for gentle slopes.

Dujiangyan town and its ancient irrigation system

Panda Valley is easy to combine with the rest of Dujiangyan. The town is home to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a UNESCO-listed water project built in the third century BC that still divides the Min River and waters the Chengdu plain without a dam. Its riverside levees, suspension bridge and temples on the hillside make a beautiful afternoon after the pandas.

Next to it, the restored old quarter of Guanxian Ancient City has traditional streets, tea houses and small shops, and Yangtianwo Plaza is a lively riverside square. The private transfer option in the booking panel includes stops at the scenic area, the plaza and the old town, making a full Dujiangyan panda day trip from Chengdu with your own driver.

How to get there, opening hours and best time to visit

How to get to Dujiangyan Panda Valley: from Chengdu, the intercity train reaches Dujiangyan in about thirty to forty minutes, then a taxi takes around twenty minutes to the valley; by road the drive is about an hour and a quarter. The default ticket does not include transport, so the shared coach and private transfer options are worth considering.

Dujiangyan Panda Valley opening hours: from 1 May to 31 October the morning session runs from 7:30 to 12:00 and the afternoon session from 12:00 to 17:00, with the park closing at 18:00; from 1 November to 30 April the sessions run from 8:00 to 12:00 and from 12:00 to 16:30, closing at 17:30. The best time to visit is the morning session in spring or autumn, when the pandas are active and the forest is cool.
