Overview
This full-day group tour pairs Chengdu's giant pandas with one of the great engineering wonders of the ancient world. We meet at 7:40 at a central hotel in Chengdu and spend the morning at the Chengdu Panda Base, when the pandas are feeding and most active. After a lunch break the vehicle heads north-west to Dujiangyan, where an English-speaking guide shows you the irrigation system built in the third century BC that still waters the Chengdu plain today: the Fish Mouth Levee, the spillway, the channel cut through the mountain, the swaying suspension bridge and the temple on the hillside. Entry tickets, guide and air-conditioned transport are included, and the day ends at Tianfu Square. Half-day options are also available.

Full Description
Chengdu Panda Base in the morning
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding spreads over a green hillside north of the city, with bamboo groves, shaded paths and spacious enclosures designed to resemble the mountain forests where wild pandas live. It opened in 1987 to protect pandas rescued from the wild and is now the best-known panda breeding centre in the world.
We arrive at about 8:30 and spend around three hours inside, the best time of day to see giant pandas of all ages: cubs in the nursery houses, young pandas wrestling on wooden platforms and adults chewing bamboo with great concentration. Red pandas are often seen darting through the trees. In July and August pandas retreat indoors as the day warms up, which is why the panda visit always comes first on this tour.
Dujiangyan Irrigation System
Built around 256 BC by the governor of the ancient state of Shu, Dujiangyan is the oldest working water-management system in the world that diverts a river without a dam. Instead of blocking the Min River as it rushes out of the mountains, it divides and guides the water, protecting the Chengdu plain from floods and irrigating thousands of square kilometres of farmland. It turned Sichuan into the land of abundance it is still called today.
Since 2000 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with nearby Mount Qingcheng. Is Dujiangyan worth visiting? For anyone curious about history and engineering, and for families who enjoy riverside parks, it is one of the most rewarding day trips from Chengdu.
Fish Mouth Levee, Flying Sand Weir and Bottle-Neck Channel
The genius of Dujiangyan lies in three simple parts. The Fish Mouth Levee is a long, pointed island that splits the Min River into an inner channel for irrigation and an outer channel for floods, sending more water to the fields in the dry season and more to the outer river in the wet season. The Flying Sand Weir is a low spillway that throws excess water and sand back into the outer river.
The Bottle-Neck Channel, cut through solid rock with fire and water long before explosives existed, controls how much water flows on to the plain. Over about two to two and a half hours the guide walks you along the levees and viewpoints and explains how the whole system works together, still maintained every winter as it has been for centuries.
Anlan Suspension Bridge and Erwang Temple
Crossing the rushing river, the Anlan Suspension Bridge is one of the most photographed spots in Dujiangyan. The original bridge was made of bamboo cables; today's version keeps the old design and still sways gently as you walk across, with wide views of the levees and the mountains beyond.
On the wooded slope above the river stands Erwang Temple, a complex of halls, courtyards and staircases built to honour the builders of the waterworks. Its carved roofs, old trees and lookout terraces give a peaceful end to the visit, with views back over the river. The hillside steps are steady but numerous, so take them at your own pace while the guide explains the history.
Getting there and best time to visit
How to get to Dujiangyan from Chengdu: the scenic area lies about sixty kilometres north-west of the city, roughly an hour and ten minutes by road from the panda base. On this Dujiangyan day trip from Chengdu the vehicle and tickets are arranged for you, so you simply enjoy the day and finish at Tianfu Square, the central square with direct metro connections.
The best time to visit is spring and autumn, when the riverside parks are green and the weather is mild. Summer brings the most powerful river flows but also heat and crowds on Chinese holidays. Internal shuttles at both sites are optional and paid on the spot.
