Overview

This half-day small-group tour takes you to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, the city's best-loved sight, at the hour when the pandas are most awake. We meet in central Chengdu at 8:00, ride together in an air-conditioned vehicle and spend around three hours inside the base with an English-speaking guide who knows where to find cubs, playful youngsters and red pandas. The group is capped at fifteen travellers, so the pace stays relaxed and questions are easy to ask. It suits families, couples, friends and first-time visitors who want the pandas without arranging tickets and transport. You are back in the city around midday, and a full-day option adds the Leshan Giant Buddha.

Full Description

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

The panda base opened in 1987 on a wooded hillside in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, about ten kilometres from the centre, to protect giant pandas rescued from the wild. Today it is the best-known panda conservation and breeding centre in the world, and its breeding programme has helped move the giant panda off the endangered list. The grounds have been widely extended in recent years, with new open-air enclosures, bamboo groves, lakes and shaded paths designed to feel like the mountain forests of Sichuan.

Is Chengdu Panda Base worth visiting? For most travellers it is the reason to come to Chengdu at all. A Chengdu panda base tour with a guide saves time on a large site where first-time visitors often get lost, and the guide explains the research behind what you see, from diet studies to the training of young pandas.

Panda enclosures, nurseries and cubs

Adult giant pandas spend most of the day eating, getting through a remarkable amount of fresh bamboo, and they are most lively in the cool early hours when the keepers bring breakfast. That is why we start at 8:00. In the outdoor enclosures you often see young pandas climbing trees, tumbling down slopes and wrestling with each other, while older pandas sit upright and chew bamboo stalks with great concentration.

Most panda cubs are born in late summer and early autumn, and from autumn into winter the nursery houses are the best place to see the youngest ones through the glass. Your guide knows which enclosures are busiest on the day and moves the group ahead of the crowds, so you have time for photos rather than queues.

Red pandas, lakes and bamboo paths

The base is not only about giant pandas. In the wooded red panda areas these smaller, fox-sized animals with ringed tails move along branches and walkways, often right beside the path. They are just as photogenic and much more energetic in the middle of the morning, which makes them a favourite with children.

Between the enclosures, paths wind through tall bamboo, past small lakes and flowering trees, so the visit feels like a stroll in a hillside park rather than a zoo. There are covered rest areas, clean toilets and small cafés along the way. The ground slopes gently, and the guide sets an easy pace so that every member of the group can enjoy it.

How to get there, opening hours and best time to visit

How to get to Chengdu Panda Base on your own means a metro ride and a walk, or a taxi of about forty minutes in morning traffic; on this tour our vehicle takes care of it from the meeting point and brings you back. The Chengdu Panda Base opening hours are 7:30 to 18:00 from May to October and 8:00 to 17:30 from November to April, with last entry an hour before closing. Some indoor museums inside the base close on Mondays.

The best time to visit Chengdu Panda Base is spring and autumn, when cool weather keeps the pandas outdoors for longer. In July and August the heat sends many of them into air-conditioned indoor rooms by late morning, so the early start matters even more in summer.

Leshan Giant Buddha: the full-day option

If you want more than the pandas, the full-day option continues south to the Leshan Giant Buddha after the morning at the base. Carved into a red sandstone cliff during the Tang dynasty and finished in 803, it is about 71 metres tall and sits where the Min, Dadu and Qingyi rivers meet. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Mount Emei.

This Leshan Giant Buddha day trip from Chengdu is long, around twelve hours in total, but it combines the two great sights of Sichuan in one day with the same guide and the same small group. Choose it in the booking panel on this page if you have only one free day in Chengdu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

It is a shared small-group tour of up to fifteen travellers with one English-speaking guide. If you prefer your own guide, see our private panda base tours on the Chengdu page.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

The route is fixed for the group, but the guide keeps an easy pace and gives free time for photos. Within the base you can always stay longer at an enclosure and meet the group at the next stop.

How many people join the group?

The group is limited to fifteen travellers, which keeps it easy to follow the guide on the paths.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person, with a lower child rate. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. We meet at a central shopping mall in Chengdu, and the exact spot is sent after booking. The meeting point is easy to reach by metro or taxi.

What is included?

The Chengdu Panda Base entry ticket, an English-speaking guide and return transport in an air-conditioned vehicle. Meals and personal expenses are not included.

How long is the tour?

About four and a half hours, from 8:00 until around midday. The full-day option with the Leshan Giant Buddha lasts about twelve hours.

Is it suitable for children and travellers with reduced mobility?

Children love it and must be accompanied by an adult. The main paths are paved and the base has wheelchair access, though some sections slope; travellers who tire easily can rest at the many benches.

What should I bring?

Your original passport, comfortable shoes, water, a light rain jacket, sun protection in summer and a charged phone or camera.

Spring and autumn are ideal; pandas stay outside longer in cool weather. In July and August they retreat indoors when it gets hot, so the early start helps.
