Full Description
Chen Clan Ancestral Hall
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, also known as the Chen Clan Academy, was completed in the 1890s by Chen families from across Guangdong province as an ancestral temple and a school for young men preparing for the imperial examinations. It is the finest example of Lingnan architecture in the city, with grey-brick halls and courtyards linked by corridors and covered in wood, stone, brick and ceramic carvings.
The roof ridges are the showpiece: long friezes of glazed ceramic figures, castles and landscapes made in the kilns of nearby Foshan. Inside, the halls house the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, with embroidery, carved ivory and lacquerware. Entry is included, and your guide explains the symbols in the carvings. Allow about an hour; mornings are the quietest time to visit.
Yuexiu Park, the Five Rams and the old city wall
Yuexiu Park is the largest park in central Guangzhou, a hilly green space of lakes, banyan trees and paths that locals use for tai chi, singing and chess. Near the top stands the Five Rams statue, the city's emblem, recalling the legend of five rams that brought rice to a hungry land, which gave Guangzhou its nickname, the City of Rams.
The park also keeps a stretch of the Ming-era city wall and the five-storey Zhenhai Tower, a red-walled watchtower first built in the 14th century that now holds displays of the city museum. A short climb rewards you with views over the treetops. It is the best place on this private Guangzhou city tour to watch everyday local life; plan about an hour here.
The Nanyue royal tomb museum
In 1983 builders levelling a hill in central Guangzhou uncovered an untouched stone tomb from the Western Han period, more than 2,000 years old, belonging to a king of Nanyue, the ancient kingdom that ruled this region. The museum built over the site lets you step down into the original burial chambers, then follow the treasures found inside.
The star is a jade burial suit made of jade plates sewn together with silk thread, alongside bronze bells, gold seals, ceramic pillows and a rare collection of jade discs. It is a must for understanding how old Guangzhou really is, long before it became Canton the trading port. Entry is included; your guide makes the history easy to follow in about an hour.
Huacheng Square, the Canton Tower and Zhujiang New Town
Huacheng Square is the green axis of modern Guangzhou, framed by the super-tall towers of Zhujiang New Town. Around it stand the pebble-shaped Guangzhou Opera House, the Guangdong Museum, built like a carved lacquer box, and the city library. Across the Pearl River rises the Canton Tower, 600 metres tall, with its twisted lattice shape lit in changing colours at night.
This is where your guide shows you the Guangzhou of today, and where the best skyline photos are taken. Depending on the weather, you can go up to the tower's observation deck; that ticket is optional and not included. Is the Canton Tower worth visiting? On a clear day the view over the river and the city is unforgettable. Plan about an hour in the area.
Shamian Island
Shamian Island is a small sandbank on the Pearl River that became the British and French concession in the 19th century, when Guangzhou was China's window to foreign trade. Its quiet avenues are lined with old banyan trees and stately European-style villas, former consulates, banks and churches, many now carefully restored as cafés, galleries and small museums.
Is Shamian Island worth visiting? It is one of the most relaxing corners of the city and a favourite for photos, with bronze street sculptures and a riverside promenade. The tour usually ends here if time permits, with about 45 minutes to explore. Close by are the old Cantonese lanes of Liwan district, so your guide can add a short look at local life if you wish.
Cantonese cuisine and your private day
Guangzhou is famous across China for its food, and dim sum is its signature: steamed shrimp dumplings, open-topped dumplings, rice-noodle rolls and buns served in bamboo baskets with tea. Your lunch or dinner with dim sum and other local dishes is included and tailored to your dietary preferences. Guangzhou has a long Muslim heritage, with halal (qingzhen) restaurants run by Hui Muslim families, so tell us if you need halal food and we plan the meal around it.
Because this is a private tour, you decide the rhythm: more time in a museum, a longer lunch or an extra stop. If you have already seen some sights, your guide can swap them for others such as the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, Guangxiao Temple or the Huaisheng Mosque.
