Full Description
Pit 1 on a Private Terracotta Army Tour
With your own guide, Pit 1 becomes a conversation rather than a lecture. The vast hall shelters the main body of the army: ranks of life-size infantry in battle order, all facing east, built more than 2,200 years ago to guard the First Emperor's tomb and found by farmers digging a well in 1974. Your guide can wait for gaps in the crowd at the front rail, point out the differences between foot soldiers and officers, and show you the restoration area at the back.
Because the pace is yours, you can return to the rail for a second look or move on quickly if the children are restless. Most private guests spend 45 minutes to an hour here, and this is where your guide's stories about moulds, kilns and hand-finished faces make the most sense.
Pits 2 and 3 and the Exhibition Halls
Pit 2 shows the army's specialist units: kneeling and standing archers, cavalry with saddled horses and chariot squares, much of it still under the original roof timbers. Its display cases let you come close to the kneeling archer, a cavalryman and a tall officer. Pit 3, the smallest, is believed to be the command post, with officers facing each other around a chariot.
The exhibition halls hold the museum's painted bronze chariots, made at about half life-size with gold and silver fittings, and rotating displays of newly restored finds. Is the Terracotta Army worth visiting with a private guide? Here the answer is clear, as your guide tailors the story to your interests, whether that is military history, craftsmanship or the archaeology still under way. Allow 45 to 60 minutes for these areas.
Lintong, Mount Li and the Tomb Mound
The warriors are in Lintong District, about 40 kilometres and an hour's drive east of central Xi'an, beneath the slopes of Mount Li. On the way your guide explains the wider burial complex: the First Emperor's tomb mound, still sealed and covered in trees, lies about 1.5 kilometres west of the pits, and ancient texts describe a buried palace with rivers of mercury.
Nearby are the Huaqing Palace hot springs, a retreat of Tang-era rulers. On a private tour you can ask your driver for a photo stop on the way back. How to get to the Terracotta Army without stress is exactly what this private tour solves: no buses, no metro changes and no searching for the right gate.
Lunch Near the Museum and the Exit Market
Meals are not included, which leaves you free to eat when and where you like. After the visit your guide can suggest a good local restaurant near the museum exit for Shaanxi favourites such as biangbiang noodles or roujiamo flatbread sandwiches. Halal (qingzhen) noodle shops run by Hui Muslim families are common across Shaanxi; if you eat only halal food, tell your guide and they will help you find one, or plan dinner in Xi'an's Muslim Quarter.
The museum exit leads through a long market area with snack stalls and souvenir shops selling small terracotta replicas. If you prefer, your guide can give you some free time there before the drive back. On the default option the whole tour, including travel, takes about 5 hours.
Starting from the Station or Airport, or Making It a Full Day
Many travellers arrive in Xi'an by high-speed train at Xi'an North Railway Station or by air at Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY), about an hour from the city. Separate private options on this page start from the station or the airport, so you can visit the warriors on the day you arrive or leave; just send us your train or flight number.
If one sight is not enough, the private full-day option adds the City Wall and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda with the same guide and vehicle. There are also options with a private vehicle and driver but no guide, or a private guide meeting you at the museum. The best time to visit the Terracotta Army is early morning or mid-afternoon, which you can choose freely.
