Full Description
The Terracotta Army in the Morning
The day begins with the highlight. About an hour east of the city, in Lintong, the warriors museum covers three excavated pits. Pit 1 holds the long ranks of infantry facing east, each figure with its own face; Pit 2 shows kneeling archers, cavalry and chariots; Pit 3 is the small command post. Farmers found the first fragments while digging a well in 1974, and UNESCO listed the site in 1987.
Mornings are the best time to visit the Terracotta Army, before the halls fill, so your guide leads you straight to Pit 1 and then through the other pits and the exhibition halls with the painted bronze chariots. Expect about 2.5 hours inside. Your guide explains how the figures were moulded, finished by hand and armed, and why archaeologists have chosen not to open the nearby tomb mound.
Family Lunch in a Lintong Village
After the museum the group drives a few minutes into the Lintong countryside, a landscape of small farms and pomegranate orchards at the foot of Mount Li. Lunch is served at the table of a village family: home-style Shaanxi dishes such as hand-made noodles, steamed buns and seasonal vegetables, cooked in the family kitchen rather than a tourist restaurant.
Your guide translates, so the hour becomes a conversation about farming, family life and the changes the area has seen since the warriors were discovered. Please tell us about dietary needs, such as vegetarian meals or no pork, when you book, and we pass them on in advance. If you eat only halal food, the Muslim Quarter in the city centre is the easiest place for dinner, with many qingzhen restaurants run by Hui Muslim families.
Xi'an City Wall
Xi'an City Wall is the most complete ancient city wall in China. Built in the 1370s in the early Ming dynasty on the line of the older Tang imperial city, it runs for about 13.7 kilometres around the old centre, stands about 12 metres high and is broad enough on top for a wide promenade. Watchtowers rise at regular intervals, each about an arrow's range apart, and a moat still circles the base.
Your ticket covers access to the top, and your guide walks with you along a section above one of the main gates, with views over the Bell Tower axis on one side and the modern city on the other. Is Xi'an City Wall worth visiting? For many travellers it is the clearest way to feel the scale of the old capital. Plan about an hour here.
The Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Da Ci'en Temple
The Big Wild Goose Pagoda was built in 652 to protect Buddhist scriptures brought back from India along the Silk Road, and it was rebuilt soon after in brick. Rising about 64 metres in seven storeys, it leans very slightly and has become the symbol of Xi'an. Since 2014 it has been part of the UNESCO-listed Silk Roads routes network, and it stands inside Da Ci'en Temple, a working monastery with incense-filled courtyards and halls of Buddhist statues.
Your guide explains the pagoda's role in the spread of Buddhism in China and shows you the temple's carved stone tablets and murals. Climbing the inner stairs of the pagoda is ticketed separately on site. Allow about an hour, then the group heads back to the hotels.
Planning Your Xi'an Day Tour
This full day covers the sights most travellers want on a short visit, which is why many choose it as their first day in the city. The route makes sense on the map: east to Lintong in the morning, then back into town for the wall and the pagoda, avoiding the worst of the traffic. Expect around 8.5 hours from pickup to drop-off.
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons for walking on the wall; summer afternoons are hot, and winter days are cold but clear. After the tour, the square north of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda hosts a large musical fountain on most evenings, and the lanes of the Muslim Quarter near the Drum Tower come alive with halal street food, both easy to reach by taxi.
