Full Description

Mount Huashan, the Western Mountain

Huashan is the western peak of the Five Great Mountains, the sacred mountains of ancient China, and a centre of Daoist practice for many centuries. Its five summits are carved from a single massif of pale granite, cut by vertical cliffs that drop hundreds of metres. Stone steps, chains and narrow ridge paths link the peaks, and small temples, gates and pavilions cling to the rock along the way. The mountain stands in Huayin, east of Xi'an, where the plain of the Wei River meets the Qinling range.

A Mount Huashan day trip from Xi'an is one of the great physical adventures of a visit to Shaanxi. Is Huashan worth visiting? For views alone it rivals any mountain in China, and the cable cars mean that even travellers who are not serious hikers can reach the summits. Expect a long but rewarding day, with several hours of walking on stairs once you are at the top.

West Peak and the West Peak Cable Car

From the visitor centre a scenic-area shuttle bus climbs a winding road to the lower station of the West Peak cable car. The ride itself is one of the longest in China, more than four kilometres, and it swings over deep gorges and razor ridges for around twenty minutes. Have your camera ready on the right-hand side for the first views of the summit walls.

West Peak, at about 2,082 metres, is also called Lotus Peak because the rocks at its top are said to resemble lotus petals. Here you find a Daoist temple, carved inscriptions and a sheer cliff face that drops straight into the valley. It is the natural starting point of the summit loop, and on this route you never have to walk the same section twice, which saves both time and energy.

South Peak, East Peak and the Summit Loop

From West Peak a stone path leads to South Peak, the highest summit of Huashan at about 2,155 metres, where a marker and a small temple stand on the top. Nearby is the famous cliffside plank walk, a narrow board path fixed to the rock face; it needs a separate ticket and a safety harness, queues can be long, and it is entirely optional.

East Peak, at about 2,096 metres, is called the Facing the Sun Peak because many visitors stay overnight to watch the sunrise from it. Below its summit a small pavilion stands on a rock pillar, reached only by a vertical iron ladder. Walking from West Peak through South and East Peaks to the Middle Peak takes roughly three to four hours with photo breaks. Steps are steep but well built, with chains and railings on the exposed sections.

Middle Peak, North Peak and the Way Down

Middle Peak, also called Jade Maiden Peak, sits between the higher summits and is the quietest point of the loop, with a small temple and benches in the shade of pines. From here the path drops along the Black Dragon Ridge, a famous narrow spine of rock with stairs cut into its crest, towards North Peak.

North Peak, at about 1,614 metres, is the lowest of the five but offers wide views back to the higher summits and over the plain. Its cable car is shorter, about ten minutes, and a shuttle bus returns you to the visitor centre, where our guide meets you. Allow time for the North Peak queues on busy days; leaving the summits by mid-afternoon keeps you comfortably on schedule for the return coach.

How to Get to Huashan and the Best Time to Go

How to get to Huashan from Xi'an? You can take a high-speed train to Huashan North station and then local buses, but tickets, shuttles and cable cars all need separate queues. This trip bundles the coach, entry ticket, shuttle buses and both cable cars, and our guide sorts the tickets, which saves a lot of time. The drive takes about two hours each way.

The best time to visit Huashan is April to June and September to October, when the air is clear and temperatures are mild. Summer is hot at the base but pleasant at the top, with thunderstorms in the afternoon; winter brings snow and ice, so paths can close and the cable cars stop in high wind. Avoid Chinese public holidays if you can, when queues at the cable cars become very long.

On the summits you walk at your own pace. The route is set by the option you book: West Peak up and North Peak down, a West Peak round trip, or a North Peak round trip. On the private options the start time is more flexible.

How many people join the shared trip?

The shared coach carries a mixed group of travellers and seats are first come, first served. On the private options the vehicle is chosen for the size of your party.
